A Tail Could Tell a Tale

Locklyn Adair has never fit in. The legs she inherited as a result of her great-great-grandmother’s curse make it impossible for her to belong under the sea. When her niece is also born without a tail, Locklyn is determined to save her from similar rejection by sending her to the only place in the Undersea Realm where legs are acceptable—the Lost Island of Atlantis.

Darin Aalto would do anything to protect his family, even spearheading an impossible quest to find treasure that has been lost for over a hundred years. But when his best friend, Locklyn, joins his crew, his ability to keep her safe—and his shot at winning her heart—comes perilously close to being swept away.

A family curse, lost treasure, unrequited love, and a race against time intertwine as Locklyn and Darin seek to save their family, their kingdom, and eventually the entire Undersea Realm without losing each other.

L.E. Richmond was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest by an American writing teacher and a German bookseller. Her childhood consisted in a large part of imagining stories for her PLAYMOBIL characters and checking out as many books from the library as her family could fit on six library cards. Now she spends her time chasing three little Muggles, reading aloud to the hazel-eyed young man who has her heart, and attempting to transfer the stories in her head into words for others. Her passion is for words and stories that thrill the soul, and she is endlessly amazed by the One who not only used words to bring this world into being but also crafted the most epic story of all time.

What did. I just. Read?

Forgive me if this review sounds muddled. It likely is. I'm sitting here in cold shock attempting to work through the emotions and reading-induced adrenaline this book evokes. I want to squeal and bawl at the same time.

Ahem.

Did I read this book in less than a day? Yes. Will I be lying awake at night wondering what will happen to those poor, darling characters? You betcha. Read on to learn why this book is one you need on your bookshelf.

PLOT:
Well. That was quite the roller coaster of a plot. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat as action-packed chapter after action-packed chapter keeps you captivated and unable to put the book down. I don't know that I can say more without exposing spoilers, but I will say this: I've seen this book receive some unhappy reviews due to the cliffhanger ending. Now, I myself certainly would like more of the story (no, I need more) but the cliffhanger is written tastefully and is not nearly so "terrible" as it is made out to be.

WORLDBUILDING:
Usually, this is included in the Plot section, but there was so much worldbuilding in The Mermaid's Tale that it deserves its own category. Guys. The detail and creativity used to weave this underground world, these cultures, and all those legends and tales is immensely incredible.

CHARACTERS
Locklyn is a dear. Plus, I love her name. Instead of being one of those insipid "heroines" who are mostly helpless, can never do anything, and only whine and scream about their helplessness, Locklyn is the definition a quietly strong heroine. She had her limitations, but that made her strengths shine through all the brighter. I admired her tender and kind heart as well.

Darin was my favorite, probably because we share some similar traits. I will admit I dislike it when main male characters have long hair, but that didn't detract one bit from him being my favorite. And that ending. By the seven seas, how will I manage to wait until the second book? I really don't think I can.

FAITH/RELIGION:
The faith content is there. A little lighter than some books, but there's no mistaking its presence. And the final chapter in the author's acknowledgment note is just beautiful.

CONTENT WARNINGS:
There is violence, although everything is tastefully-wrought.

Characters are injured, attacked, and are made victims of hatred. Underwater animals and their dangers are pondered and discussed. Characters are also poisoned.

SEXUAL CONTENT/ROMANCE
Everything was tastefully addressed in this category as well.

It is implied a character is almost sexually assaulted; this will likely go over younger readers' heads. It is incorrectly assumed that two characters are joining out of wedlock; however, the reader knows that is the product of villainous minds taking a situation out of context. Like I said, it's well-done.

A female character notices a male character's physique. It stayed within the appropriate boundaries, which I appreciated, and didn't bother me one bit. There was nothing lustful or nasty about it.

CONCLUSION:
The Mermaid's Tale is a story filled with twists, turns, nonstop action and danger, and the gentle reminder that God made us who and how we are, and our design is not a failure in His eyes. I enjoyed the inspiration drawn from the Little Mermaid tale. This book is definitely unique. For anyone desiring an engaging Christian fantasy, I highly recommend The Mermaid's Tale.

The Mermaid's Tale is a the story of Locklyn, a Mermaid without a tail. She is an outcast in her society because of this. When her niece is also born without a tail, Locklyn decides she needs to find the money to send her niece to Atlantis, the society where Mermaids without tails are not shunned. She and her best friend/brother in law, Darin, set out on a daring adventure to find a vast treasure that will solve their family's problems.

I loved the Mermaid cultures, the lore, and the setting. The plot was adventurous and kept me engaged.

I love world building, so I would love to see more world building in the next book! The end was an absolute cliff hanger, so I'm excited to see what happens in the next one! The book tells many stories about the Mermaid culture, but I sometimes had a hard time imagining what the rooms, cities, people, etc. really looked like. I also loved how the author wove in elements of Faith within the story.

Content/Cleanliness Rating: 4.5/5: One character pushes his unwanted advances onto the main character. He becomes violent and verbally and physically attempts to assault her. The main character spends a lot of time thinking about her love interest, although there is nothing inappropriate mentioned. The content is wholesome and "clean." Characters rely on the "Wave Master," to get them through difficult times.

⭐⭐⭐💫

I’ll be honest. That ending thoroughly ticked me off. I cannot believe I didn’t expect that cliffhanger!!! Now, I don’t have anything against cliffhangers, but oh, my gosh. I was not ready for that one. 😭

You’ve been forewarned. The Mermaid’s Tale has a brutal cliffhanger, and Lord only knows how long we’re gonna have to wait for the next book in the duology. *shakes head* Now, about the rest of the story…

Currently, I’ve been having a hard time getting into books, and The Mermaid’s Tale was no exception. The first chapter or two didn’t quite draw me in, and it wasn’t until I forced myself to keep on plowing through and I reached the middle that I couldn’t put it down. I still never felt fully invested in the story, but I was definitely intrigued, and I had to find out what happened next!

Before cracking open The Mermaid’s Tale, I was ecstatic about reading a mermaid novel. It’s a rare occurrence when you find one that’s not a retelling of The Little Mermaid in some way, so this one seemed super interesting. Personally, I had several peeves—the plot was chaotic and hard for me to follow at times; there was a lot of back-and-forth miscommunication or lack of communication that to me felt unnecessary; and because this was only the first half of the story, there seemed to be something missing by way of character development.

As far as the characters go, our side characters (such as Ginevra and Conway) were unique and piqued my curiosity—I’m interested in seeing where their characters and stories go! Our main characters, however, were not my personal favorites as much as the secondary characters were. Locklyn had some great potential, but she felt cliché to me, and Darin…I don’t know about him. It was hard to get a read on him, though there’s still potential for him too. I feel like reading the next book (whenever I’ll be able to do that) will really help me get a better feel for these two and formulate fuller thoughts. Until then, I’m not a huge fan, but that may change.

The worldbuilding was fascinating, though. Richmond pulled out all the stops in creating a deep (no pun intended) and unique undersea world, which I appreciated. But at the same time, the execution had its flaws. There was a lot of info-dumping, which jerked me out of the story and got me off track a time or two. And I feel like there were elements that were missing or never fully explored. For example, the Wave Master, who’s name is only mentioned in prayers. I’m assuming the WM is an allegorical form of God, but the mer-people’s religion was never expounded upon. I was left with as many questions as I had answers, which could prove to be a good thing if my questions are answered in the next installment.

*sighs* Honestly, The Mermaid’s Tale wasn’t all I’d hoped it would be, but it did drag me under the sea with it, and once the ball got rolling (or swimming?), I couldn’t put it down! There were a lot of aspects that I’m unsure about, but I certainly want to read the next book to discover what happens next and see how my opinions change as the story is fleshed out!

If you’re looking for an undersea fantasy with classic romance tropes (friends-to-lovers, love triangle, miscommunication) and an interesting twist on the traditional tales (tails?) of mermaids, The Mermaid’s Tale is for you!

Never read a mermaid book before but this one definitely made me want to read more. Beware the major cliffhanger ending
November 7, 2023
Most people that know me, know that I love being in any form of water and any given time. So it felt like a God-thing to find a mermaid book from a Christian worldview.
So when I first found out about this book back sometime this summer I was stoked, and this book did not disappoint.

Sometimes the faith content in Enclave books are hit or miss (imo), but I felt like the correlation between the Wave Master & God are clear which was awesome.

The characters were super sweet, and I really felt like I was immersed into the lands/waters of this book.

There were a few things I felt like were more shallow but I'm assuming that's because they'res another Undersea Chronicle book in the making and we'll get to see all of that later.

What I liked:
🐚 The writing style
🐚 The way content was approached (whenever any sort of violence showed up it wasn't taken lightly. The weight of good vs evil wasn't brushed away)
🐚 The world building was ✨

What I didn't love:
🫧 It felt like the book could've been a little longer imo (haha I just want moreeee)
🫧 It feels like there was a lot of buildup and questions made but we never really got answers (I guess that's to keep us reading into the next book but it felt a little abrupt)

Overall this was a really cool read and I can't wait for the next one!

Content review to come :)

Can't wait for this book ✨🧜‍♀

Okay, I understand that this is a duology, but why must you leave us off on a cliffhanger especially considering that this book doesn’t even release until October? I don’t think I’m going to survive, I NEED to know what happens to Darin and Locklyn and the rest of the crew!!

This book was so unique, but I also loved the hints and Easter eggs of the Little Mermaid that were throughout this book. This under the sea novel was full of action, some romance (lovers of friends-to-lovers will love this one 😉), and family. This book caught my attention from page 1 and still has not released me from its prison. I seriously need book 2 now! 😂 I cannot wait to see what Mrs. Richmond has in store for us in book 2…like I’ve already mentioned, I need it!

Firstly, I can’t talk about this book without mentioning how absolutely stunning its cover is. A book starts with its cover, after all, and this one sparked into my not-mermaid-loving, not-big-faces-on-covers-loving heart an immediate interest.

The story itself is a fascinating undersea society with props to our Disney classic through history and a sublime reversal of a mermaid with legs seeking the witch for a tail. The aquatic world that Richmond has created is uniquely fascinating in its environment and landscape, lived in by rich, relatable characters and a love quadrilateral with some pretty dramatic twists! Locklyn is a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps kind of girl, Darin is a foot-in-mouth heartthrob (if, of course, he had actual feet), and both struggle to express their true feelings as they undertake the most dangerous quest of a lifetime. With that tail-slap to the gut of an ending and themes of love, sacrifice, and courage, this is a story under the sea you won’t want to miss.

I meant to write this review earlier, but time got away from me. So, you'll have to forgive me if this review is sparse.

WHAT I LIKED:

-Richmond has created a vibrant world for the Merfolk. I loved the detail she put into the worldbuilding, especially the minor things.

-The Mermaid's Tale is more of a continuation of The Little Mermaid rather than a retelling. But I liked exploring the ideas of what might have happened after the original tale, and Richmond puts her own spin on things.

WHAT I STRUGGLED WITH:

I'll be perfectly honest: love triangles are not my favorite. So, the love square did annoy me a little bit. I really just wanted everyone to stop making assumptions and just talk about their feelings. 😂

OVERALL:

If you're looking for a mermaid read or a fresh take on a fairy tale, consider The Mermaid's Tale! But beware, the ending will leave you needing the next book. 😉

Cautions: brief, semi-graphic violence; moderate romance; brief, non-descript mentions of a character having to fend off advances *

*It's been a while since I finished The Mermaid's Tale so I might have forgotten a caution.

This book is amazing!!!!! I am already dying to read book 2!!!! The characters are so fun, and you get pulled into the story immediately. From page 1, I was hooked! Trust me when I say you need to read this book!

Darin was absolutely amazing, and I love the relationship he has with Locklyn. They work so well together, and they make the best team!! I wish it had ended on a less crazy cliffhanger, but hey, it makes you want more. I’m not quite sure what I think about Conway. He’s fun, but I’m not sold on him just yet lol.

An exciting undersea tale filled with adventure, sacrifice, and love.

A mermaid born with legs instead of fins, Locklyn has lives her life as a social outcast, but when her niece is born with the same condition she is determined to do everything she can to give her more opportunities than her herself had.

A riveting story with fantastic world building and a compelling plot, and characters that you can root for all the way through. I loved the fast paced, twisting plot, set in the lush undersea world. The plot is original and imaginative, though inspired by the Little Mermaid, the author does and excellent job of remaking pieces of the tale into something completely her own.

Darin is a likable hero, strong, protective, and willing to fight for others. Despite his flaws, his heart is pure. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of the third person, present tense that his chapters are told in, but as the story progressed it didn't bother me so much.

Overall, a wonderful read with a riveting plot, and compelling characters that leave you begging for more. A terrific introduction to a new author, perfect for fans of fantasy, and friends to lovers romance!

Well, I’m going to state the obvious… the cover of this book is fantastic!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the book, but I was pleasantly surprised at the vivid undersea descriptions and the amazing world building of an entire undersea society. The attention to detail in L.E. Richmond’s writing describing the merpeople’s blankets as “scratchy, posidonia-fiber” (I had to look up posidonia!) and the bubbles that escape the merpeople’s mouths when they talk made it so I wasn’t pulled out of the story and could really envision being in the undersea world. The Mermaid’s Tale has themes of family, overcoming discrimination, faith, adventure and love.

Locklyn Adair, a mermaid, who through a curse passed down through the generations that was originally done to her Great-Great-Grandmother, has legs instead of a tail. Locklyn is abandoned as an infant, and endures lifelong discrimination by the merpeople because of her legs and being different from those around her. Locklyn’s sister Amaya, her husband Beck and his brother Darin all took care of Locklyn when she was young and helped to raise her into a strong and independent young merwoman.

When Locklyn’s sister Amaya has a baby that is also born with legs and fulfilling the family curse, her brother in law Darin, a treasure hunter, pursues a treasure in the hopes to help her baby and their family. Locklyn and Darin go in search of a long believed missing treasure together with a group of merpeople who, in spite of their many differences, will have to work together to get the treasure and help Locklyn and Darin’s family.

This book leaves off on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read book two and get some of my questions answered!

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who like reading clean fantasy, especially about mermaids!

Thank you to L.E. Richmond for the eARC of her book. All opinions are my own.

I'll post a more thorough review later this week (hopefully), but for now I'll say this: Go read this book. Richmond creates a rich, beautiful, and timeless tale of love, friendship, loyalty, greed, and honor all within a masterfully crafted underwater world.

I adore this book as a reader, but I love it even more as a writer. Reading this book felt like taking a masterclass in atmospheric worldbuilding. When you write, you're setting the tone and mood of the world, and Richmond does this flawlessly.

Some of my favorite ways that she does this is by incorporating phrases that are so similar to our everyday ones, but with an underwater twist, such as "Why under the sea...?" and "Moonstone for your thoughts?" These are simple phrases that bring the world alive in a way that makes it feel lived-in, realistic, and believable.

Content Warnings: Abandonment, animal cruelty, animal death, blood, bullying, death, injury/injury detail, kidnapping, murder, sexual assault (implied, but not shown on page), sexual harassment (implied, but not graphic), and violence.

What a fabulous Little Mermaid retelling/reimagining!

In The Mermaid’s Tale, L.E. Richmond creates an underwater world that is full of complex and diverse characters. There’s plenty of trouble under the sea.

I enjoyed how this story was written from the 2 main characters’ perspectives. Ending on a little bit of a cliffhanger, I’m eager to read book 2 as soon as possible!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5 stars)

I would highly recommend this book to YA fantasy readers who are fans of The Little Mermaid or who enjoy mermaid stories!

Interesting start to a series. This is not you Disney’s little mermaid series. What if Ariel didn’t repay Ursula and her family was cursed. What would one little mermaid do to life the curse son not one more in her family had to live with it as she had done.

A fun little read and I will probably check out at least book two and see where the series goes.

Engaging underwater adventure perfect for a summertime read!

And this cover is simply GORGEOUS.

Can you imagine being a mermaid without a tail? Locklyn’s legs are part of a family curse, causing her to live as an outcast.

She’s brave to join her best friend, Darin Aalto, on a quest to search for a treasure that could change her family’s future. So many obstacles to swim through (besides having no tail): plenty of enemies, dangerous sea creatures, difficult choices, and even a little bit of a love triangle to complicate matters.

I loved the vivid descriptions of this Undersea Realm and look forward to the next book! Recommend if you like clean YA fairytale retellings

Summary:
As the result of a family curse, Locklyn is born with legs. When her niece inherits the same curse, Locklyn and Darin--the MMC and brother of Locklyn's brother-in-law--take measures to send her to Atlantis, the one place where Merpeople with legs are accepted. Their efforts go awry, however, and to make things right they must embark on a quest to find a legendary treasure from a lost shipwreck. With any luck, this same treasure might also provide a way for them to free Locklyn's family of the curse.

Review:
L.E. Richmond creates a vivid undersea world full of relatable, multi-dimensional characters. And Chris Hemsworth as a younger, copper-eyed Merman (at least, that's how I picture Darin :D).

Really, though, Richmond does an excellent job developing the characters, layering in complexity through conflicting emotions, unmet desires, and unshared secrets. She also realistically portrays the struggle of vulnerability, fear, and jealousy, and the way that struggle can cause us to lash out at those we love, or shut them out entirely.

The pacing is solid, every scene feels like it has a purpose, and all the different people the group meet on their quest for the treasure both add to the reader's sense of the world and keep the story moving. Also, knowing this was the first book of a series, I was kept guessing whether they would find the treasure, if they did whether it would happen in this book or the next one, and what would keep the story going for multiple novels. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say this provids a satisfying combination of resolution with open-endedness for the continuation of the saga.

Full of curses, magic, treasure, and more, I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the sequel!

I won an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own, and I was not required or asked to leave a review. (It's just that good!)

Okay, some things to know about this book! First of all, I loved it. And I've never liked a single mermaid book I've tried.

The Mermaid's Tale is super fast paced and will hook you in toward the start. I was a little skeptical about the first chapter because it didn't get us anywhere, but things REALLY pick up after that.

All the character motivations are impressively strong, and you find yourself rooting for opposing sides of conflicts, which is fun in my opinion.

I thought this would be a sweet Disney's Little Mermaid style retelling, but the world Richmond creates is actually quite brutal. There's a wild, dystopian edge to the culture under the sea, where crimes go unpunished, people groups are persecuted, and citizens are afraid of their government. The story involves underground fighting, vicious treasure hunts, and black market goods.

Life under the sea feels surprisingly believable here, which is usually the issue I have with mermaid stories. It's hard to make a fish society seem human. But this one really hit the mark for me!

This is a duology with a bit of a cliffhanger, but honestly I felt like I got a full story. I'm definitely excited for the sequel, but I don't feel ripped-off completely where things just end in the middle of all the action.

I'll be recommending this book to teens in my life, especially if they enjoy paranormal romance or Pirates of the Caribbean.

Also, the main characters model seeking good and trusting God, but not in a preachy way. They still feel like real, normal people. There are plenty of mistakes and difficult choices, but the story is encouraging toward faith.

Let me start at the beginning. Literally. I love, LOVE this cover. It draws you in immediately. And the premise of the story is great. The new take on the familiar Little Mermaid is imaginative and fresh. The undersea world is well created and laid out vividly for readers. Other reviews have mentioned the cliffhanger ending, and while I would've like a little more wrapped up in this story (I felt almost everything was left up in the air), I don't mind a cliffhanger. The story is interesting enough that I will want to find out what happens next. I also enjoyed the characters and the undersea mythology the story is built on.

There is only one negative I had in reading this story. The heroine is written in first person and the hero in third. This makes the story-telling (not the story itself) a bit disjointed for me and hard to just sit back and take in. The difference was especially noticeable to me because I felt the author was stronger in the third person than the first. I felt there were quite a few times in first person that information was told to me instead of worked into the dialogue or action of the chapters.

That being said, I was drawn into the story by the time I was a few chapters in, and the plot and twists on the original tale were strong enough to keep me reading until the end. I look forward to reading the next book and seeing where the author takes her mermaid's tale. I give this book three stars, though if I could, it would be three and a half. Definitely an enjoyable book, worth the read. I received an ARC of this book through Celebrate Lit. The reviews and opinions are my own and freely given.

There is more under the sea than lost treasure...

Finally a mermaid story that doesn't star the Little Mermaid... Nope, our aquatic heroine has her own story to tell and it's a real doozy! To be honest, I was surprised when I found out that The Mermaid's Tale with it's vividness and complexity is more than just the start of Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm, it is also L.E. Richmond's debut novel. Color me impressed!

Right from the start I loved the way author L.E. Richmond cleverly blended locations in the real world - like the Mediterranean and the North Sea – with her imaginative and colorful Undersea Realm. The mix of the familiar and the magical almost makes you wonder if there is more to the ocean depths than we know... It also makes for some delightful and sometimes intense reading as the fate of the underwater realm falls onto the shoulders of one young mermaid without a tail.

The Mermaid's Tale is a fun adventure filled YA read with many twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it all figured out – I didn't. As much as I love guessing things correctly I also love to simply be surprised by a story now and then. This first Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm book certainly delivered in that department.

There was only one single thing that I didn't like about The Mermaid's Tale...How could by L.E. Richmond leave me hanging like that?! How?! I already wanted to read the next Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm novel but now I am utterly desperate....

Now that I have settled down from that cliffhanger of an ending, I can finally write my review of The Mermaid’s Tale.

I absolutely loved this story. Let’s start with this fantastic world that L.E. Richmond created. The undersea world is incredibly imaginative, and I loved it so much that I wish I could go and ask for a tail just so that I could go visit it. And perhaps join Locklyn, Darin and the others on the adventure of a lifetime.

I have mixed feelings about the characters. I loved Locklyn and Darin and their relationship that has been seemingly nurtured overtime. Both of them have an unconditional love for their family that drives them to go on an extremely dangerous, life-threatening quest to find a lost treasure to potentially save their loved ones. Both of them have strong, stubborn personalities that keep them going. However, they’re locked in a love square that I’m not sure how to feel about. The only reason they are in that situation is because no one can talk about their feelings or communicate. I absolutely love love triangles–if done right. This one felt somewhat forced and unnecessary which took away from the story.

However, I still absolutely loved this book. It is filled with action, adventure, and a sprinkle of faith that will leave one turning the pages. I will be anxiously looking out for the next book in the series.

I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.

The Mermaid’s Tale by L. E. Richmond is a Young Adult Fantasy retelling. As I began reading, I enjoyed getting to know Locklyn Adair; her story proved interesting. Without a tail, she lives on the fringes of the Merpeople world.

Unable to fit in herself, she refuses to let her newborn niece, also born without a tail, suffer the same fate. With rulers with secrets of their own and a best friend who would do anything to save their niece, they find themselves setting out to find a lost treasure. The author did an excellent job of setting the pace throughout the story. I loved getting to know the characters.

But my one absolute complaint about this book is the ending. It just abruptly stops with no rhyme or reason. I can only assume that the author plans to continue the story in the next book. But even the first book in a series should have some semblance of a proper ending. If I was reading a physical book rather than an ebook, I may have been tempted to throw the book across the room.

So, if you do not mind introductory books to a series that draw you into the story, but leave you floundering with the ending, check out The Mermaid’s Tale by L. E. Richmond for yourself. I definitely recommend the book, but not the ending.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Beware of the cliffhanger ending but besides that this was an exciting, well written fiction that reminds you why reading is so much fun. It is a story where the underwater world is extremely well developed and creatively described. I personally loved how the characters were developed. I appreciated the interpersonal relationships that created the conflict, courage, devotion, sacrifices and consequences of everyone’s place in the plot. Wanting something so badly you will sacrifice everything only to realize it didn’t really solve your problems, but actually created others is a message that can teach even in a fantastical storyline like this one.

I typically will read a book like this when I know the second book is already in print so sitting up late and reading the last line, only to realize it left me more than hanging was a bit frustrating, but then I realized it is just the sign of a VERY good book, if I am mad that I don’t get to keep reading.

I received an ebook copy of this book from Enclave Publishers and the opinions expressed here in this review are my own. Thank you Enclave for publishing awesome books and searching out amazing authors.

Diving into The Mermaid's Tale was just what I needed! Richmond's underwater world delivers the perfect adrenaline rush as Locklyn and Darin risk everything for their loved ones as they venture out on a mission and encounter fantastical sea monsters, ancient folklore in the flesh, undiscovered magic, and secret enemies.

This Little Mermaid re-telling has so many unique twists and turns. Locklyn is a character you will sympathize with - a cursed mermaid born with legs, who is despised by all. Her selfless heart was endearing and I cheered her on for the entire story.

I must admit - I struggled to connect with Darin's POV. Being written in the third person distanced me from him in a way I can't quite explain. I loved everything he stood for as a loyal, brave, compassionate friend. However, it wasn't until the cliffhanger ending that I kind of realized WHY his POV was written in this way. Now I kind of want to do a re-read knowing what I know now...

sigh...I guess I will have to keep treading water to get the conclusion to their adventure in book #2 - I hope I don't have to wait too long!

The Mermaid’s Tale is a young adult fantasy retelling story that is written by L. E. Richmond. I really liked the opposite of The Little Mermaid. Locklyn Adair has never fit in. The legs she inherited as a result of her great-great-grandmother’s curse make it impossible for her to belong under the sea. However, she does not let that stop her. Locklyn is determined, strong and brave. Her niece is born without a tail - and Locklyn wants to get her somewhere safe, and that means getting her to the Lost Island of Atlantis.

Darin Aalto would do anything for his family. So Locklyn shows up to try and find a treasure he sees an opportunity to protect and possibly win her heart. I loved all the twists and turns that the book had - I was not prepared for the journey this story took me on. I loved the unique take on the fantasy retelling. Fantasy is not my go to genre, but I really enjoyed this story.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

I love anything mermaid. That's just the easy part. I feel at home in the water, getting to know these characters that sucked me right in. Think of this as picking up where the not Disney story left off in a way. What if Ursula didn't accept payment from Ariel, or Ariel didn't pay her back?

Suffering from a curse, Locklyn can't stand to have it keep happening to her family. So, she's headed to find Atlantis, and change things. She really needs tail abilities back, but that's not an easy task. Darin needs to find treasure and so there's a potential romance here, depending on the other "suitors". They are brave and fun to read.

My only stress is the ending. I do struggle with cliffhangers. It makes me feel like I forgot to read the end of the book. That said, it's a series so I'm trying to not hold my breath, unless I'm underwater, till I can read the next book.

Mega thanks and a big tail swish to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. This review is my own and a positive review is never required,

The Mermaid's Tale is the first book from the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm series by L E Richmond. It was an interesting story about mermaids, with a big twist from the classic tale that we all know. I liked that it was not predictable and made wanting to read more. I enjoyed the setting, plot and characters. There were a few scenes a little slower than others, but still an overall great read.

I am giving The Mermaid's Tale four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoyed reading twists to old fairy tales and fantastical fiction. I would be interested in seeing what happens in the second installment from the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm series.

I received a copy of L E Richmond’s The Mermaid's Tale from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Do you like mermaids?
I have always been fascinated by them.
(Loved watching H2O 😍🧜‍♀️).
So receiving an eARC of The Mermaid's Tale from the publisher/author, I was so thrilled! And just look at that book cover!

Let me tell you that this story kept me reading till 1 in the morning. 🥲
A page turner!
An interesting twist for a mermaid story.
Though I just wished Locklyn and Darin talked about their problems (reason why I gave it 4 stars). 🥲
If you are looking for a retelling of the little mermaid, fast paced story, adventure, treasure hunting, deep sea creatures (they are scary!), and of course, mermaids! This book is for you! 😊

Looking forward for the next (and new stories from the author) book.

Let’s first address the cover of this book. Wow. It is spectacular and one of the best I have seen. It definitely is an eye catcher and perfect for the story. I couldn’t wait to see what adventure awaited me. Now I have been fascinated with mermaids all my life. The funny thing is I don’t know how to swim and don’t like getting in the water. But oh my what an adventure to be under the sea and looking at what God has designed.

There is quite a bit of action in the story with scenes that are vivid in description. The author does a great job of keeping readers engaged. With danger, people trying to protect others and an epic adventure this would be a great book for fantasy lovers.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

4.5 Stars

Wow. This underwater story is such an incredible adventure, filled with intriguing characters, an immersive world, and high stakes. From the first page, I was drawn into the story by a unique world and realistic characters. The magic and world features are new and refreshing, and the twisty way the new tale is woven with the original keeps you engaged and guessing as to what's coming next. Add in a slow-burn romance—or two—and this story is a must-read for anyone who likes mermaids, treasure hunting, and/or strong characters who keep fighting, no matter what.

*I didn't give it five stars because the switching from first-person POV with Locklyn to third-person POV with Darin was too jarring for me.
