Eight-year-old Angela loves school, but with a germophobic teacher she fears that she may not get the chance to enter her school's upcoming poetry contest. To make matters worse, Angela soon discovers that she's partly responsible for her biggest rival (Little Miss Kung Fu) getting sick and subsequently banned from the competition. Will Angela outwit her teacher to win yet another contest or will her love for winning help her win a lifelong friend?
I won this digital copy from the author through Goodreads. Thank you. For the most part, I enjoyed the story. It had a good message. The illustrations are great! I, however, was disappointed in the portrayal of the teacher. She was depicted as mean. I am not sure what age group this story is meant for, but if I was a young child just entering school, I would not want to go. I was an elementary teacher for 25 years. If a teacher acted like this one did, she wouldn't be there long.
I received a Kindle copy of this book from Goodreads. It's not perfect, but few books are. I particularly didn't find the portrayal of the teacher nice. I suppose many people encounter a grade-school teacher who's not as nurturing as those in children's books, but I think it's less than optimal to expose kids to that point. Also noticed a couple grammatical errors, but generally okay.
Ok…so it started out with a simple enough plot about a little girl who doesn’t want to get sick before a big poetry contest. Then suddenly it’s about a teacher who gets mad at kids for being sick, maybe about bullying, and also friendship, wearing a mask, and helping others. It was a little chaotic, and a teacher who just got mad at kids for sneezing and sent them to the principal’s office seemed extreme at best, and unrealistic at it’s worst. It was hard to pinpoint the age range…I think a four year-old would enjoy the pictures, but get the wrong ideas from the plot (or what they understood), and upper elementary would have a lot of questions (or confusion…honestly, I was confused).
**I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. All opinions are my own.**
I received this E-book book free through Goodreads First Read.
This could be a cute book about helping and making friends, but there were some parts of the book that were confusing.
I was confused on why the artist drew the new kid wearing a leotard when she was suppose to be showing off karate moves at school. Also, the school part seemed unbelievable since they send students home if they sneeze/cough. If that was the case, the majority of kids would miss half the school year.
