message 1: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments So for Christmas I was given a total of $50 for Barns & Noble and I have no idea what to get!!! Does anyone have any good suggestions for books?

message 2: by Stella (new)

Stella (stella_exlibris) | 57 comments I would recommend The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford, have just read it, and immensely enjoyed it, so sarcastically funny, you'll laugh out loud at parts! :-)

It also depends what kind of books you like.

E.g if you like:

- Pride and Prejudice: I would definitely recommend North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, it is most commonly described as "P&P with a social conscience", and I have to say many people forgot who Mr. Darcy was after reading about Mr. Thornton! ;-)

- Little Women: you should check out An Old Fashioned Girl also by Louisa May Alcott, much better than LW!!

- historical novels, like Philippa Gregory: Outlander (Cross Stitch) by Diana Gabaldon, this book is definitely my Desert Island Book!

- Agatha Christie: then a quite unknown book: The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, unbelievably original and fantastic!

- chick lit: The Nanny or The Learning Curve yb Melissa Nathan, Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella,

- paranormal novels: Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, her writing quality is superb!

These are what come to my mind right now, hopw I could help :-)

Gwynne | 63 comments I am currently a huge fan of Jasper Fforde. I would especially recommend the Nursery Crime Division books: The Big Over Easy and The Fourth Bear. They are amazingly creative and truly funny.

Jessica, if you're into fantasy, Neil Gaiman's books like Stardust, Neverwhere or Anansi Boys might be interesting. I'm currently reading Neverwhere right now.

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments Oh wow thank you. Those are really good ideas!

I really like all kinds of books. My favorite authors are Janet Evanovich, Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Philippa Gregory... Now I like so many more!

message 6: by Elizabeth (last edited Jan 17, 2009 10:18AM) (new)

Elizabeth Jessica, if you really like Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, than I strongly recommend anything by R.A. Salvatore.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) the Book thief or Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close!

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments Emily, I have seen Bad Kitty and Kitty Kitty on the self at the only used book store we have here (which sucks) and have thought about getting it... You know it sounds a lot like the Stephanie Plum series. :-)

You know Elizabeth, my husband has three of his books and has told me that they are great. I think I have decided to read them next time I get into a Dragon lance mood.

What are those Jamie?

**Thank you everyone! All of your idea's are great and very appreciated! :-)**

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) 2 of the best books i read in the past few months.

The Book Thief (its technically a YA novel but didn't feel like one)
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close ( a really incredible story..you will fall in love with the main character Oskar..he is so delightful)

message 10: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments I think am going to have to go get The Book Thief. It sounds like an interesting book.

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments So I have realized that I don't like Barns & Noble very much! It may just be the fact that they had none of the books that I wanted!!! I now have to go online to order my books! I really don't like to order online. I am one of those people that has to hold and see the book in my hand to know if I really want it or just borrow it...

message 12: by Ann (new)

Ann | 345 comments I saw you have the LOTR series listed on your "to-read" shelf, so you might want to see if you can get a nice boxed set (unless you already have one).
Also, I'll take this moment to plug one of my new favorites and say Larklight A Rousing Tale of Dauntless Pluck in the Farthest Reaches of Space, but you might want to read the first few pages - if you like them then you'll probably love the book, if not, then you probably won't like the style for the rest of the book.
Have fun choosing!:D

message 13: by Ann (new)

Ann | 345 comments Oh, and just a not on B&N, careful if you're checking prices online. One time I went to buy cds for a really good price but realized too late that the online prices differed from the ones in the store. It said this on my coupon, of course, but I just didn't read carefully enough :p But, the nice thing is that you have the gift card so you *have* to spend it ;>

message 14: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (punkurz) | 3 comments Have you read any Stephen King? Start with The Stand.

Also, I love anything by Bret Easton Ellis, like Rules of Attraction and Less Than Zero - but these are more character study books about LA kids gone wrong. Nothing really happens except a lot of introspection, sex and drug abuse.

And if you like completely vulgar, sexual humor go for Tucker Max's I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.

No joke, Ann. I went through that a few weeks ago. I drove across the valley to go to the B&N that had the CD because I had the gift card and had seen it was a good price online. Right. NOT. I don't know if I've EVERY bought a CD for the price they wanted!!

My book just came out :-)

Hugs to everyone at The Rory Gilmore Book Club! :-)

message 17: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments Ann: Yea I have LOTR. I started to read it but I was just not in the mood.

Ann/whichwaydidshego?: And I have noticed that unfortunately... I went to the store and it turns out that the books were almost double what the website said...

Bianca: It's funny that you say that because I was talking to my Father-In-Law today about how good of a book it is and how I want to read it. Luckily I already have it. :-)Yea I don't think that Bret Easton Ellis is the author for me but thank you!

Shaindel: I took a look at your book and it looks interesting. Good Job! I want to write a book so badly.

message 18: by Liz (new)

Liz | 18 comments The Book Thief is absolutely amazing. It IS technically YA, but that doesn't mean anything, it was very worth the read.
I also read A Thousand Splendid Suns recently. It was so good. I highly recommend it (its by the author of The Kite Runner).

message 19: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments The Book Thief does seem like it is going to be more than a YA book. Oh I will have to take a look at A Thousand Splendid Suns... I heard The Kite Runner is really good.
I also heard that the Lost series is good. I am borrowing it from a friend because she said it was fantastic.

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie Burdett (burdek) The Book Thief is marketed as a YA book--but it is so thought provoking and well written, I would recommend it for any avid reader. My 17 year old recommended it to me (and I am significantly older than the YA age group!!!) and I loved it. Try it, I think you'll like it. Also A Thousand Splendid Skys is a great book--I think better than The Kite Runner.

message 21: by Shaindel (new)

Shaindel | 54 comments Thanks so much, Jessica :-) If you read it, please do a Goodreads review...

Take care,
Shaindel

message 22: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments No problem! I was looking at the B&N here and they don't have it right now... But that's good for you right? :-)

message 23: by Shaindel (new)

Shaindel | 54 comments Yeah... B&N's buyers really only carry well established authors, usually... My book is on both Amazon.com and Target.com , though :-)

message 24: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments oh ok thanks. :-) I will have to take a look.

message 25: by Jill (new)

Jill DeLeon (orangetoenails) | 1 comments I'm currently reading Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl. I'm loving it so far...and it's definitely something a self confessed bookworm would enjoy. ;)

message 26: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments That sounds like a very interesting book Jill.

message 27: by Arctic (last edited Feb 05, 2009 01:12PM) (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Shaindel, just curious, did you know that Stephen W. Hawking has a book with the same title? any connection, or just coincidence?

Also, I need a book recommendation if anyone can help... something touching to do with mother/daughter generational female family relationships etc. thanks in advance if anyone can think of anything!

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a very touching book about a mother-daughter-relationship, Heather: Life on the Refrigerator Door Notes Between a Mother and a Daughter - A Novel I don't want to give any content spoilers now, I'll just say I cried in the end and I normally don't cry easily.
I really liked the style, the book is composed of notes and letters that mother and daughter leave each other on the refrigerator door (as the title already implies). So if you like letter-style books, you'll probably like that one.

message 29: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments sounds interesting, Marion - thanks!

I'm actually looking for something to share with my mom. Her mother recently passed away unexpectedly. My grandmother was not very close to my siblings and I, but I know my mom will miss her terribly. I wanted to read something with her that might help with the grief.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Well uhm.. In that case, I guess I'll have to spoiler because I don't want your reading experience to end in a disaster.. The mom in the book gets cancer and dies in the end. Don't know if that will be the right read, then. I mean, the girl manages to cope and the book mainly focuses on that, but there are some pretty hard passages in there.
Hope I didn't spoil it now :X But I guess it would have been worse if your mom wasn't in the state of mind for that kind of book.

message 31: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments LOL yeah thanks for the warning. I noticed a trivia question about cancer on the book's page actually, so I was wondering if it might be something like that. I still might pick it up for myself anyway though. :)

message 32: by Stella (new)

Stella (stella_exlibris) | 57 comments Marion it sounds interesting, I will also check it out, thanks for the recommendation! that's what I love about these communities: you get to hear and know books which you never would have come across, thanks to some friends having the same interests and taste reciommending them! :-)

message 33: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 361 comments Arctic, One of the books that I remember absolutely loving is Mama's Bank Account It's been years since I read it, so I honestly can't remember if the mom dies at the end but if so it is not the main focus of the story and is probably told just more as a summarizing of her wonderful life. I believe this book is the inspriation for the movie, "I Remember Mama." Incidentally, my mom loved both the book and movie and is the one who recommended them to me.

message 34: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Thanks Kathryn! that actually sounds pretty perfect. My grandparents were Czech immigrants, and I know that this had a huge impact on their life in the southern California.

Hi, Arctic,

Yes, I greatly admire Hawking, and the title poem of my book is actually inclusive of some of his theories (in my mind, at least). I didn't plan on titling my book his title, but my publisher did because of the first poem in my book.

Take care,
Shaindel

Richard | 1 comments I just finished Descent The R. Connors Story by Simon Cleveland Descent The R. Connors Story and found the story to be an exceptionally well crafted mystery. If you like time shifts, mind twists, ancient myths and contemporary suspense, I highly recommend it.

message 38: by Jillybean (new)

Jillybean | 10 comments i suppose its a bit after xmas, but my suggestion is the Time Traveler's Wife. its a love story with a sci-fi twist and usually i;m not that into science fiction stuff (though i do like vampire stuff) this is my all time favorite book ever!
