The Improbable Meet-Cute #4

Drop, Cover, and Hold On

Rate this book
It takes nothing less than a fateful natural disaster to throw two opposites together in a ground-shakingly charming short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Drunk on Love.

This Valentine’s Day, Daisy Murray has her heart set on binge-watching rom-coms. Instead, an earthquake traps her inside a bakery with its impossibly rude and insufferably handsome owner and head baker. They already have a history: she’s always smiled, he’s always scowled. Where better to finally get to know each other than amid the disaster? Then again, they have no choice. Besides, it could have its sweet, undeniable, and unpredictable perks.

Jasmine Guillory’s Drop, Cover, and Hold On is part of The Improbable Meet-Cute, irresistibly romantic stories about finding love when and where you least expect it. They can be read or listened to in one sitting. Let’s make a date of it.

It was only 40 pages, so I don’t have much to say. It wasn't anything special and I don't understand how the mmc claimed that he liked her all along, but is always glaring at her. I didn't really feel anything for this short story.

Oh it’s rockin!😉

A California earthquake is about to rock Daisy’s world! She now finds herself trapped in a bakery with the grumpiest baker in San Francisco!

An Enemies to Lovers trope. They have to make peace pretty quickly, as this short story audio is only 1 hour!😂

But on the bright side…if you have to be trapped somewhere during an earthquake, I can’t think of a better place than a bakery!👩🏼‍🍳

Unlike the previous short stories in this collection, this one did deliver a bit of spice🌶️🌶️.

Did you hear that?
It was my stomach rumbling! I’m off to my nearest bakery for croissants while I queue up the next in the series!

Similar to the last book in this series (Rosie and the Dreamboat) this book takes place during one scene and I think that’s the reason I had trouble connecting with the characters and the romance. I think if this was a little longer, it would have been better for me.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On by Jasmine Guillory
Improbable Meet Cute Collection. Contemporary romance novella centered around a meet cute on Valentine’s Day. All six can be read on their own.
Daisy Murray has been going to the local bakery since it opened. She absolutely loves all the pastries. The owner always throws her a fierce scroll her way and Daisy is sure he hates her. So she vows to stop going. But she loves the hand pie so much she goes in anyway on Valentine’s Day where she first sees everything has been sold out and then there is an earthquake and she is stuck in the bakery with the owner.

Impressions are everything. He frowns and looks mean. She has a “resting smile face”. Their time trapped in the bakery makes them talk to each other and Daisy finds out why she always gets an extra pasty in her bag.
Look beyond first impressions. You don’t know what they are actually thinking.

Eh.

A baker and his customer get trapped in his bakery in the aftermath of an Earthquake.

She thinks he hates her; he's been pining away since he met her, even though his resting bitch face has been telling the world otherwise.

This could have been fun and sweet, but all the moving parts just felt awkward in their execution.

The chemistry was weird and the dialogue did not work for me.

This short story was only 40 pages and, to be honest, I struggled to get through even that many pages.

At this point, I'm just not sure I get along with Guillory's writing style, so this may very well be my farewell to trying. *waves*

Drop, Cover, and Hold On, Jasmine Guillory
Narrator: Aure Nash

We finally got a kiss! And an erection! There’s nothing like a good we-almost-died make-out and near third base sesh. This is the first novella in the anthology where they actually kiss on page lol. It felt like it could’ve been pulled out of the If the Sky Is Falling anthology which is a HUGE plus.

This one felt more like a full story because it didn’t only center meet-cute…which didn’t even happy because it was a meet-disaster almost? I felt like I got to know the characters more.

✨Valentine’s Day
✨Baker hero
✨Pastry porn
✨Forced proximity
✨Grumpy/sunshine

Narrator performance: Fantastic, A+, no notes! I don’t recognize that narrator’s name so I don’t think I’ve listened to her work before, but I hope to again!

With peace and love... no.

I think the first two were absolutely amazing stories, and anything past that has been disappointing so far.

I don't plan on continuing reading this series for my own sanity.

I don't know what to say about this one.
A grumpy man secretly in love with a client, because she's too good, too smiley to notice?
Until an earthquake put them together…

As with any jasmine guillory book, WAY too much exposition. And the dialogue is so simplistic. Why do the characters narrate every minute thought in their heads? Its exhausting.

2 Stars (one because I liked the narrator)! ⭐️⭐️

This is the 4th book in the Improbable Meet-Cute series on Kindle Unlimited. As I read through this series of little short stories I’m quickly realizing that they are just getting worse. I’m hesitant to keep going.

I’ve never read a book by this author. Prob not the smartest to start with this disaster. So many things wrong here but I won’t mention in an effort to not seem like a total meanie.

I listened to this on my way to work this morning. The narrator was good but the dialogue and cringey moments were just too much. The ending was awful. Not my thing.

It’s a good thing Christina Lauren and Abby Jimenez opened this series with the first two books. Read those, but I’d stop there.

🌷: ̗̀➛ one thing i absolutely love about these is that they're all on valentines day💌✨, however this one had absolutely no plot i didn't understand how he was already in love with her?, it was cute but the first two were way better, i was expecting more from this one too

"Because I fell for you that first moment I heard you laugh that day."

So.. Daisy thought Harris hated her but he actually was in love with her the entire time?? This was so cute omg I also never thought a baker could be sexy but Harris exists.

She thinks he hates her but he actually loves her. This one was not that much of a meet-cute, it lacked cuteness because of the forced proximity I think.
I just finished listening to Even If the Sky Is Falling a month ago and it was 6 short stories very much like this one. This story should have been added to that collection.
I really liked the narrator she brought so much life to this story!

When an earthquake traps Daisy Murray inside her favorite bakery with the grumpy baker who does nothing but scowl, the two have no choice but to finally get to know one another.

When I think of Valentine’s Day, it’s hard not to think of baked goods and decedent desserts. Guillory takes us right there with this super cute foodie romance involving a grumpy baker and a sunshine customer who just so happens to have a “resting smile face.” I’ll admit to a moment of frustration that our MC was so blind to the obvious, but overall this adorable novella was such a ray of sunshine, I can forgive her.

Read if you like:
•grumpy x sunshine
•foodie romance
•he falls first
•forced proximity

"Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is part of a series of Meet-Cute short stories.

As a short story, it unfolds swiftly, providing a glimpse into the initial stages of the couple's relationship. This was a great start to what could turn into a full-length book.

The setting is a new bakery in town with a sour-faced owner, whose attention is captured by a particular customer. Unbeknownst to her, the customer assumes the owner doesn't like her until they are trapped together inside the bakery during an earthquake.
