Courtney For those of you who put slaughter-house five on the list. If you never get to any of the others, get to that one! It's quick and easy and amazing. The best book EVER! And I don't say things like that lightly.

Meredith I finished Ulysses! My senior seminar in college was on James Joyce, and we spent most of the semester on it. I still haven't been able to muscle my way through Finnegans Wake, though.

My own theory is that if it hasn't been out at least 20 years you don't really know if it's a classic.

David Sometimes life is too short to slog through a 'classic'. If I'm not enjoying a book after 100 pages in, I abandon it. Ulysses I have tried twice and had to give up on. It hasn't left a hole in my existance. ;-)

The whole list gets a bit wonky towards the end. Stephanie Meyer? I'd venture to say that this list has a few errors in judgment.

Phillip Okay. So, lets just get THIS out of the way: Take all the Stephanie Meyer off and put in A Picture of Dorian Gray and (inplace of the horrific Twilight series in particular) The Dark Tower by Stephen King.

I never found it boring. Maybe I was just really interested in the social engagement of Russian society. Anyways, agree to disagree.

Tytti I have so many of these I don't know where to start. Although one of them is a book I won't even think about reading even though it was chosed as the best Finnish book written during the first 75 years of independence in 1992. It hasn't been translated so here is the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alastalo... For example choosing a pipe takes over 70 pages, so hmmm... And the sixth chapter is called "you can easily skip this chapter because in it happens no more than in any other chapter". But you could then get a t-shirt that says "I have read Alastalon salissa". :D

Tim Butcher I was sorry to see just now my book, `Blood River’ vanish from this list. Apologies to the 90 odd members who voted for it. I am trying to work out where those votes went. We authors are rightly not allowed to put our own books on lists like this, nor can we vote for them. So, to the kind supporter who first put the book on this list, a particular apology. And to anyone who might help me better understand why the book was removed, please message me, privately if you prefer.
