My Happy Marriage (Manga) #1

My Happy Marriage, Vol. 1

Rate this book
A "Cinderella"-inspired slow-burn historical romance with a paranormal twist set in Meiji-era Japan!

A browbeaten and mistreated daughter is cast out of her family home and sent to audition as a bridal candidate for the heir to one of the most powerful families in the land…

Considered nigh worthless for having failed to inherit the superhuman powers of the bloodlines into which she was born, Miyo Saimori lives her days unwanted and unloved.

She is treated as a servant by her half-sister who, unlike Miyo, is blessed with unusual powers, while her step-mother and very own father have little time or love for their eldest daughter.

Ultimately seen as nothing more than a nuisance and a drain on the family wealth, Miyo is packed off to the Kudo house as a bridal candidate for its heir, Kyoka Kudo.
But whispers abound about the Kudo clan, the most powerful in all the land. Still, will the allegedly cold and cruel house into which Miyo aims to marry prove much warmer than the family she left behind?

THIS WAS GREAT!

There are some content warnings for this one so be sure to check them out. CW: emotional abuse, physical abuse, parental neglect, death of a loved one

I’ve been meaning to read My Happy Marriage for a while, but I’m glad that I finally got to it. It’s a light Cinderella retelling that focuses on a main character, Miyo, who is abused by her cruel step-mother and half sister and completely ignored by her father. Because of his cruelty and lack of care towards her daughter, he sends her to be married to a member of the Kudo clan who is known engagements in 3 days. Once she arrives to meet Kiyoka she learns that there’s more to him than meets the eye.

The story was so engaging, beautiful, and heart wrenching. I felt so greatly for Miyo. Shes been conditioned to believe that she is worthless and unworthy of love. Luckily, Kiyoka begins to see how her family has damaged her and shows her compassion and kindness that she's not used to receiving. I'm definitely looking forward to how their relationship is going to develop over time.

I'll be blunt and say I got interested in this manga after the upcoming anime trailer got recommended to me on YouTube and all the comments below it said how wholesome the manga was. I can get it is a slow burn (which is completely my style) and also historical (which too is one of my favorite genres) so I can clearly say, so far I'm liking the story. I am in a way expecting the usual stroyline but the artwork is pretty and the story is cute thus I will continuing it.

Updated Review 6/14/23: I had been putting off rereading this first volume because I vividly remembered the heartbreak that Miyo goes through and wasn't sure if I was ready or not.

Can't say if I was or not because this is definitely as crushing as I remember, but is still such a fantastic first volume (despite that teared up quite a few times when reading Miyo's internal monologue/thoughts) and SO thankful for Kudo and Yurie who are pouring life into this young woman.

I am hoping all of the best of things for her! *sobs*

Original Review 10/28/22: THIS IS SO GOOD!!!

I DEEPLY enjoyed this heartbreaking volume! Miyo's story is compelling right from the start and only goes to rip your heart out with the abuse she has endured at the hands of her family. My heart felt so broken for her in the worthlessness that she feels and really believes she has no value throughout the course of this volume.

Thankfully, our hero Kudo is going to be I believe a catalyst in helping her begin to see that she need not basically apologize for her very existence. While I don't think this is necessarily a story of boy-saves-girl, I DO think this is a story where Kudo is going to help Miyo see she does have value. I feel that's true just from certain events that have taken place thus far.

One thing I thought interesting about the story is I feel it's rare that we sort of get the occasional back-and-forth between both the main characters. The story is mainly from Miyo's perspective, but occasionally we see what Kudo is thinking and found I really enjoyed that! His perspective is so different from Miyo that it's always interesting to see what he is actually thinking, especially when it's about Miyo's actions.

I'm VERY curious about where this story will go next, especially in regards to the paranormal aspect! I feel it's a great setup to the fantasy aspect and can't wait to see more of it in the next volume! Also, the art is STUNNING!!

Highly recommend if you like Cinderella-inspired stories, fantastic slow burn romance, and (for now) low-key fantasy! Can't wait for volume two to release!

Instant new favorite manga!!!😁

The cover, art, and flow of the story are so gorgeous! How can I be smiling with the fluffy moments while feeling melancholy with those heavy parts? I'm glad I picked up this manga today.💓

The story follows Miyo, who grew up with a childhood of tragedies that gave her scars, especially emotional ones. Then, she was given as the fiancee of Kudo, a cold but kind and handsome man. The two started to get to know each other, and it is so cute! It has its Cinderella vibes, too. There's an eight-year age gap between them, though.

I'm officially excited for its anime adaptation in July!🎉

It's been a long time since I felt this giddy about the first volume of a manga, but damn if I don't love this feeling! I'm so happy that this one ended up being precisely my cup of tea with a main couple I could root for (I adore Miyo and want to protect her at all costs; I obviously love Kiyoka because he's exactly my type) and a simple enough story that immediately snagged my attention. Can't wait to continue the series!

Is it wrong for me to say I really liked such a harsh story? Well I don’t think so (even though it may sound odd at first to say) because it doesn’t stay sad but in fact gets happier, though slowly like a flower unfurling its petals for the first time to the sun which perfectly describes Miyo’s starting journey to healing and happiness.

Miyo is amazing. She’s so kind and caring despite the absolute trauma she’s lived her whole life, and I felt so so bad for her and wanted to throw all her family off the nearest cliff because they are so VILE and I HATE them! On the other hand Lord Kudo and Yurie are absolute dears who show so much care and kindness to Miyo that I wanted to hug them both, though I’m certain Kudo would hate that, lol. He’s fascinating and I like how his “coldness” is truly just an act to protect himself from fawning ladies, and I snickered each time he started to truly fall for Miyo because his denial is so stinking cute, heehee.

I do wish the whole magical abilities and such was explained a bit better as I’m still a bit confused on what exactly Kudo’s job is and how it all works, but I suspect this is more detailed in the light novel and therefore became a casualty when it was adapted.

I would also warn those who are sensitive to or triggered by physical, emotional, and mental abuse to really research if this series will be triggering for you, as Miyo receives a lot of all three from her family (though more so on the physical side in volumes 2 and 3). As someone who’s been through mental/emotional abuse I found Milo’s experiences relatable yet not triggering though I know that threshold is different for everyone.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected I would! Between the beautiful, emotional story and the GORGEOUS artwork, I’m very happy my friend gifted this series to me!

‼️Content‼️

TRIGGER WARNING: a family is physically, emotionally, verbally, and mentally abusive to a girl

Violence: tea is thrown in a girl’s face; a child was thrown into a dark storehouse as punishment

Drug/Alcohol: a guy accuses a girl of poisoning his food (she didn’t)

Other: a family is physically, emotionally, verbally, and mentally abusive to a girl; magical abilities

I love this story so much! I just read the first three volumes because I bought vol 2 and 3 recently so I wanted to do a quick reread and read the chapters I haven't yet read.

Volume one introduces the two main characters pretty well and I just love Miyo so much. I want her to have everything she wishes <3

Oooh, a sappy romance I can really sink my teeth into.

Miyo Saimori, a humble and unassuming 19-year-old woman, has been broken down by years of abuse by her evil stepmother and stepsister, and her emotionally distant father has finally shoved her out of the house for a possible engagement to Major Kiyoka Kudo, a stern nobleman eight years her senior who has a reputation for driving away potential fiancées with his curt manner and simple way of living. But of course, he has a heart of gold and recognizes a puppy that has been kicked when he sees it . . .

It's all set in the Taisho Era (1912-1926) of an alternate reality Japan where the nobility have supernatural gifts like telepathy and pyrokinesis, so the clothes and technology are all quaint and old-fashioned and the court intrigue promises to be key to future developments.

I have the next volume on hand for tomorrow, so yay!

an fmv that is not spoilery based on AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE (the live movie adaptation): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX8jl...

After trying several manga series that didn't work out for me as fully as I'd hoped, this is SO REFRESHING.

The artwork is 10+ gorgeous. I love the historical setting (mashup of traditional + Western). The fantasy elements is pretty low key so far but still interesting! I think of it as an X-Men take. :D

The main story is about two people trying to learn more about each other's lives and how to get along and live with each other more than anything else. So the pacing is naturally slower and more slice of life. There are a lot of difficult and harsh topics and situations that Miyo goes through in her past, which heavily scars her and the way she interacts with people (specifically in this case, Lord Kudo, as she has moved to his home). She's absolutely wonderful in her humility and also lack of desire for vengeance against those who have mistreated her (namely, everyone in her family). I feel for her pain and laugh with joy whenever she is surprised by Kudo and his housekeeper's kindness. And I just LOVE how Kudo is trying to turn it around for her by guiding her to be more assertive, and understand that she deserves to be treated with respect as a Person. He can come across as quite harsh (although he mostly just comes across as a tad sarcastic to me), but he is also presented as very human through his own uncertainty as to how to deal with his potential fiancee's troubling, constant self-abasement due to her tormented past. His arc is one of learning as well.

If you like healing journeys and two people coming together and showing each other love and respect, this is for you.

Looking forward to the rest of this series!!

(The live action adaptation for this looks simply AWESOME~~ I've seen some fmv edits of AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE, and I must say that the cast perfectly matches this manga. Added this as the first jdrama-film that I really want to watch. And now, I may just try to check out the anime as well, too. ^-^)

The beautiful edit referenced (Major Spoilers): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1sby...

Content: very clean; PG-13 only for the sake of the more mature themes and topics involving the FL being abused (like Cinderella)

Miyo Saimori should have been raised as the beloved eldest daughter of the noble Saimori family. Instead, since she wasn't born with her mother's Gift, her father neglected her after her mother's death and allowed his new wife to treat her as though she were less than a servant. When Kaya, his daughter by his new wife, turned out to be Gifted, it sealed Miyo's fate. The best she could hope for was the possibility that her father might allow her to marry Koji, her childhood friend.

Unfortunately, he instead arranges for Kaya to marry Koji. Miyo is sent to Kiyoka Kudo to be his bride. The Kudo family is wealthy and powerful, so normally this would be good news, except Kiyoka is known for being so cold and harsh towards his prospective brides that they've all left within three days of arriving at his home. However, Miyo has nowhere else to go. Whatever Kiyoka says or does, she'll have to bear it. Luckily for her, he's not as horrible as the stories about him and made him seem.

I read the first light novel volume a few months ago, and my biggest complaint was that the writing and story were very, very spare. There was none of the usual light novel bloat, but the author also didn't spend much time on things that could have used more attention.

I had hopes that the manga would be better. In several ways, it was. The artwork was gorgeous, with more in the way of backgrounds than I'm used to seeing in manga based on light novels. The artist did a great job with characters' facial expressions, although for Miyo that mostly meant something in the range of either "sad" or "hopeless." My absolute favorite character was Yurie, Kiyoka's servant, who was adorable in this adaptation. She reminded me of Touko Fujiwara in Natsume's Book of Friends, a total sweetheart.

Unfortunately, it seems like the manga may have inherited some of the light novel's problems. There was barely any conflict, and what was there was generally dealt with quickly. Miyo's biggest concern was that Kiyoka would throw her out when he found out that she didn't have the power or education that one might expect a girl from a noble family to have. Instead of letting readers fret along with her, it was made clear by the end of the volume that Kiyoka found out about everything she was trying to hide from him and was fine with it all. It was obvious early on that Kiyoka was falling for Miyo, and every older woman in Kiyoka's acquaintance recognized it too and gleefully encouraged the match.

Koji's father has only made a brief appearance so far, and Miyo's father is already showing himself to be an idiot who assumes it's a given that Kiyoka will throw Miyo out. Here's hoping the manga can wring something interesting out of the whole "mysterious and powerful Usuba family" aspect.

As in the light novel, the fantasy aspects were very slight. Gifts were mentioned a few times, but we only saw them used on-page once, near the end of the volume.

There's a good chance this isn't worth continuing, but I'll probably do so anyway, because this has a few tropes I generally enjoy ("icy hero who turns into a softie for the heroine" is a big one). I really want to like this series, so I'm hoping one version or another (the anime maybe?) eventually makes that possible. I'll suppose foolishly keep trying until I don't have the willpower for it anymore. At least the manga (and eventually anime) version gives me pretty artwork.

Extras:

A bonus short story by the original light novel author, in which we learn how Miyo got the comb she used prior to the one Kiyoka gave her.

Rating Note:

My review probably sounds like a less-than-3-stars one, but that's at least in part due to my feelings about the light novel. I tend to rate initial volumes higher than they maybe deserve, on the theory that the series has a chance to get better, and technically that's true for this series too. Ever the optimist, at least where manga and light novels are concerned.

It's depressingly sad yet beautiful at the same time. I adore men like Bocchan!! Augh! By the way, I like the supernatural touch on the taisho romance story. I've been hungry for some more after Here Comes Miss Modern and Taisho Otome Fairytale! And this one is perfect! But if you're going to ask me what I commonly like among these three, it's the gakuran! Hahaha! I really find gakuran-wearing males hot and attractive! Man, and they are all softies!

typical arranged marriage trope with the male lead being almost perfect and powerful while the female lead is not educated and is considered as a servant by her family. there's nothing much happening for now but i am already seeing the revenhe arc of the fl from her abusive family.

Molto, molto, molto carino!

Ah! I didn't feel like watching the anime so i picked up the light novel.. and it's amazing, I'm going to cry. I AM crying with such a big grin on my face, ugh.

Would Miyo look good in this? He tried to picture her wearing it…but quickly banished the image from his mind, abashed. What on earth am I doing? There was no special meaning to this. None at all.

He's just like Loid 'its for the mission' Forger.

“…You really never smile.”

Who do you think said this line? The sweet little girl, abused and abandoned, hoping to stay with this man in any capacity? Or the cruel grumpy guy who has chased away numerous marriage prospects?

Miyo reacted to everything with fresh wonder, which made her fascinating to watch. In fact, Kiyoka was enjoying her company so much more than he expected. He even considered making a habit of spending his days off like this.

Casual domesticity ✨

His lips and his voice quivered. What was this strange feeling? Was it wonder? Excitement? Delight? Or all of that at once? There was a simpler word for it, though: love.

Hihihihihihi

As for Kiyoka, he simply wanted someone who would want to stay by his side. He wanted someone who would genuinely enjoy living in his forest cottage as his wife, not simply relish his status or wealth. And Miyo would do that. He had no intention of letting go of her.

My misunderstood little baby and my other little baby.. now kiss! 🌝

It was all too easy for him to picture himself spoiling Miyo with gifts, forever chasing this warm feeling in his chest.

My favourite genre.

“Be careful in the city. Don’t talk to strangers.”
She thought he was being overprotective, as if she were a child.

Oh! the strict man is being overprotective. Let me exorcise myself of this feminist spirit.

It had been a week since Miyo had started keeping to her room. To Kiyoka, each of those days felt long and depressing. She wouldn’t even see him off when he was leaving for work or come out to greet him when he returned. She took her meals in her room. His days grew colorless without seeing her, and his house—somehow colder.

Look me in my eyes. He MISSED her. She brought colour and warmth to his life.

“Miyo.” He said her name for the first time in a voice so gentle that simply hearing it was pure bliss. “Would you tie my hair for me?”

Ugh! D. I. A. B. E. T. E. S.

Lastly,

Miyo wondered if Kiyoka’s father would be disappointed and angry when he discovered he hadn’t gotten his son the woman he’d bargained for. She expressed this worry to Kiyoka, who snorted dismissively.

“If he complains, I’ll turn him into a pile of ashes.”

Rather than reassure her, his savage remark made her worry for his father instead.

I love this man and i approve of this arranged marriage. 💯

I watched the anime, My Happy Marriage, back in October and instantly became obsessed. I put the manga on hold right after finishing and was so happy when this one came in!! I loved it!! This volume comprises the content shown in the first three episodes of season one of the anime. It was beautifully illustrated and so interesting to see how closely the show followed it. I loved getting more insights into the characters in this version and feel like I appreciate them even more. This is a Cinderella inspired slow burn romance and it is SO good!! It is depressing and hopeful and made me feel so much just as the anime did. Today, I discovered the manga is actually based on light novels written by Akumi Agitogi, so the anime is an adaptation of an adaptation 😂😂 Hopefully I can get my hands on the light novels at some point because I love this world and these characters!!

I’m not a big romance fan but this was really well done and cute. I love Miyo. She’s so precious and deserves the world. 😭

It almost has some Cinderella vibes with the evil stepmother and stepsister thing?? But there’s also an arranged marriage…which seems promising! I’m about to binge read the last three volumes and I hope Miyo gets revenge on her family. 🫣

Cinderella in a Taisho era full of spirits and hidden magic

Oh man, this one is a prime example of hurt/comfort and I am HERE for it

Miyo Saimori has had a hard life. Abused by her step mother and half sister, ignored by her father, and avoided by the servants, she has nothing but hand me downs one step away from being thrown away to call her own. Even the man she hoped would marry, one of the few who showed her kindness after her mother passed, is stolen by her step sister, and Miyo is sent to marry a wealthy and intimidating man infamous for chasing preview bride candidates out I'm three days.

With nowhere to go, she accepts her fate and tries to makes the best of it before she's turned out on the streets to starve.

Her prospective husband is kinder than she expected, though, and so begins their tentative love story.

This one is such a soft, slow burn so far and its female lead its such a tragic, melancholic character that I can't help but root for her happiness. I felt myself tearing up a few times during Miyo's inner monologues. I just want to give her a hug.

Also, this art its GORGEOUS.

Oh, and the world building? I am fascinated and want know more.
