"Since its premiere in Paris in 1841, Giselle has captured the imagination and torn at the heart with its Romantic tale of love, tragedy, vengeful ghosts, yearning and madness. Adolphe Adam's exquisite music perfectly captures the ballet's dramatic blend of real-life passions and unearthly glamour. The story of Giselle is a classic of Romantic art. A village girl falls in love with a man who is not all he seems. When she finds out his deception, she dies of a broken heart. Transformed into a spirit, she battles to save her lover in a wood haunted by 'Wilis', the ghosts of jilted women. Adolphe Adam's eloquent music is one of the best-loved ballet scores, and is presented here in a new recording with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. From the joyful dances as Giselle and Albrecht fall in love in Act I, to the other-worldly Wilis in Act II, this is music of constant beauty and variety. As well as revealing the beauty of Adam's score for the music- and ballet-lover, this album provides a new opportunity for dancers. It includes ten key solo movements performed at different speeds, designed to suit differences in choreography or in dancers' individual physicality and technique." -- Jbhifi.com.au

Profile of Dame Ninette de Valois, reverentially called "Madam," depicting her multifaceted roles of dancer, choreographer, teacher, and company director. The program explores her significance as the founder of a national ballet company, school, and style in Britain, and the personal qualities that enabled her achievements. Topics include her collaboration with visionary theater manager Lilian Baylis of the Sadler's Wells Theatre; the formation of the Sadler's Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet); the founding and expansion of her school; her choreographic works, often based on English themes, and characterized by a strong sense of drama; her ability to recognize talent in her dancers; her collaboration with composer-conductor Constant Lambert; her recruitment of Frederick Ashton as choreographer for her company. Former dancers from her company discuss her teaching style, and the qualities she tried to instill in her students; they also contrast her choreographic method with that of Ashton. In addition to archival footage of her ballets, members of the Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet are seen in rehearsal footage of recent revivals of The rake's progress, The prospect before us, The gods go a-begging, and Checkmate

The numerous performance excerpts include The prince of the pagodas, Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Mayerling, Danses concertantes, House of birds, The burrow, The invitation, Gloria, and Isadora.
