Seine erste musikalische Ausbildung (Gesang, Geige, Flöte, Klavier) erhielt der österreichische Musiktheoretiker und -pädagoge Simon Sechter (1788-1867) bei Johann Nepomuk Maxandt. Später setzte er sein Studium bei Leopold A. Koželuh (Klavier) und Hartmann, einem vermutlichen Schüler Albrechtsbergers, fort (Kontrapunkt). 1825 wurde er zum Hoforganisten ernannt und war zehn Jahre lang auch Klavierlehrer der Hofsängerknaben, bevor er 1851 als Professor für Generalbass und Kontrapunkt ans Wiener Konservatorium berufen wurde. Zu seinen Schülern zählten u.a. Gustav Nottebohm, Selmar Bagge, Sigismun
