Octavian, an ardent young nobleman in Vienna during the reign of Maria Theresa is in love with an older woman, the wise and thoughtful Feldmarshallin, Princess von Werdenberg. Her cousin, the middle-aged, boorish and lecherous Baron Ochs is about to marry a beautiful young heiress, Sophie von Faninal. The Princess, knowing that Octavian would be happier and better off with a younger woman, arranges for Octavian and Sophie to meet, whereupon they promptly fall in love. Through a series of further machinations the Princess convinces her cousin Ochs that Sophie is not an appropriate bride for him, and, in a final scene, all are reconciled and the way is clear for Sophie and Octavian to marry
