Die Walküre by Richard Wagner( )

23 editions published between 1944 and 2002 in 3 languages and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Even by the Met's own high standards, this Walküre cast is nothing short of breathtaking. Lauritz Melchior's truly heroic Siegmund beautifully complements Rose Bampton's feminine, appealing Sieglinde. No wonder Helen Traubel (Brünnhilde) melts when she sees the depths of their love for each other. But Kerstin Thorborg's imperious Fricka is unyielding in her demands that her husband, Wotan (Herbert Janssen), punish Siegmund for breaking the laws of marriage. With menacing, black-voiced bass Alexander Kipnis as the aggrieved Hunding, and conducted by George Szell, this is Wagner at his most stirring
Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner( Recording )

57 editions published between 1930 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Wagner's groundbreaking early masterpiece, the splendid Ramón Vinay sings Tannhäuser, the man and artist torn between love of the sensual and the innocent kind, embodied by the sensational Astrid Varnay as Venus and the radiant Margaret Harshaw as the saintly Elisabeth. George Szell leads a superb cast that also includes George London's Wolfram and Jerome Hines's Landgrave. The 23-year-old Roberta Peters delivers an unexpected star turn as the Shepherd Boy

Johannes-passion = St. John Passion : highlights by Johann Sebastian Bach( )

4 editions published in 2002 in German and Undetermined and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The foundations of Marc Minkowski's career lie in Baroque music, and he has enjoyed a long relationship with Warner Classics, but this Johannes-Passion (St John Passion) is his first Bach for the label. The work's terse drama--here presented through just nine singers--is ideally suited to both his scrupulous musicianship and his keen sense of theatre. The French conductor describes Bach's great masterpieces as 'a journey you have to prepare for meticulously, over a long period of time. You come back from it like an explorer comes back from Everest or the moon--transformed'"--Warnerclassics.com
Tristan & Isolde by Richard Wagner( Recording )

4 editions published between 1991 and 2001 in German and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Peter Konwitschny's Tristan und Isolde proves to be refreshingly controversial in its interpretation of this grand classic. In his hands, the towering Wagner opera becomes an optimistic work about two people who succeed in finding love."--Container

In the courtyard of the palace of Agamemnon, murdered king of Mycenae, Elektra bemoans her father's murder at the hands of her mother, Klytämnestra, and her mother's lover, Aegisth. She vows vengeance. She is interrupted by her younger sister, Chrysothemis, who urges Elektra to give up her obsession with revenge so they both can lead normal lives. Chrysothemis reappears with news that Orest is dead. Stunned, Elektra tells her sister she must now help kill Klytämnestra and Aegisth. When the girl pulls away in terror and runs off, Elektra starts to dig for the buried ax that killed Agamemnon. She is interrupted by a stranger who says he has come to inform Klytämnestra of Orest's death. When Elektra reveals her name, he tells her Orest lives. Servants come and kiss his hand. The dogs of the house know me, he says, but not my own sister. Crying his name, Elektra falls into Orest's arms and tells him she has lived only for his return. Their reunion is cut short when Orest is summoned before Klytämnestra. He kills both the queen and her lover. Elektra begins an ecstatic dance and when Chryothemis returns, Elektra falls dead
