Six suites for violoncello solo. by
Johann Sebastian Bach(
)
30 editions published between 1900 and 1993 in 4 languages and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This new edition, in contrast to the array of Bach Cello Suite publications available today, has made use of all the five sources which have come down to us. The basis for this edition is the most reliable of the sources, the manuscript copy in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach. All variant readings from the four other sources are clearly laid out for performance. Cellists now have the possibility of rendering performances based on just one of the five sources as well as the option of combining the sources in a mixed version. - Publisher

40 melodic studies : opus 31 : for cello by
Sebastian Lee(
)
24 editions published between 1853 and 2001 in 4 languages and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Sebastian Lee, a cellist and composer in the early 1800s, is not very well known considering the large number of compositions for cello he published during his lifetime. Of all his work, only his etudes, of which he published collections at every difficulty level, remain popular today. Opus 31, 40 Melodic and Progressive Etudes, was written for use by the Conservatoire in Paris, and since its release it has remained one of the most widely used cello etude books. - sharmusic.com

Six caprices : for cello solo, with 2nd cello ad libitum, op. 11 by
Adrien-François Servais(
)
27 editions published between 1922 and 1985 in 4 languages and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Say the word "caprice," and our minds immediately go to Paganini and Piatti. However, other composers also wrote caprices as studies, among them François Servais (1807-66). Servais was a Belgian cello virtuoso and composer. As was typical of the Romantic Era composers, the bulk of his output included opera fantasies and variations on popular themes. Our new edition of Servais's 6 Caprices is based on the two first editions, Richault (French) and Schott (German), graciously provided by the Servais Society, faithfully combined into a beautiful, newly engraved, critical edition. Our edition is the first to include a score of the two cello parts. All the textual variants between the two first editions are noted in the footnotes. Our edition also comes with separate parts, which include Servais's original fingerings. - Preface
