Oktober 2003 in Budapest, Balassi Bálint Institut, stattgefunden hat. Während dieses Symposiums stand das Wirken Kaiser Ferdinands I. (1503-1564) in Ostmitteleuropa im Vordergrund: In erster Linie beschäftigten sich ungarische HistorikerInnen mit der Politik Ferdinands in bezug auf das Osmanische Reich; diese Beiträge werden ergänzt durch Ausführungen zur Kirchen- und Wirtschaftspolitik jenes Habsburgers in Ungarn selbst, wobei einmal auch Kroatien ins Zentrum rückt. Es kommt zu einer auffälligen Neubewertung von Politik und Wirken Ferdinands, der nun als einer der bedeutendsten ungarischen Könige gesehen wird. Zwei tschechische Historiker widmen sich dem Königreich Böhmen als einer weiteren Domäne des umfassenden mitteleuropäischen Reichs von König Ferdinand, der 1558 seinem Bruder Karl V. als Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reichs nachfolgen sollte. Die österreichischen HistorikerInnen stellen in ihren Beiträgen den Bezug zu den habsburgischen "Erblanden" her, womit der von Ferdinand beherrschte Territorialkomplex abgerundet wird. Aufgrund der Publikation der Beiträge in deutscher Sprache werden der Fachwelt zum ersten Mal die einschlägigen ungarischen Forschungsansätze und -ergebnisse zugänglich, die auf einen weiteren regen Austausch hoffen lassen
