»Wilhelm Killmayers Liedschaffen ist innerhalb seines Œuvres das dichteste. Es begleitet sein kompositorisches Leben von Anfang an. In seinem Liedschaffen kann man tatsächlich sehr genau die verschiedenen, an der vertonten Lyrik entwickelten Tonfälle entdecken, die dennoch eine grundlegende Eigensprachlichkeit bewahren. In besonderer Weise tritt ein spezieller Tonfall bei den Vertonungen zutage, denen der Komponist drei Werkgruppen mit Liedern von Friedrich Hölderlin widmete. Prinzipiell ist es Killmayer gelungen, eine spezielle klangliche Aura für die fast vollständig komponierten Gedichte zu finden, die dieser ebenso einfachen wie hermetischen Lyrik angemessen ist. Die Lieder versuchen auszudrücken, was der Text meint und wie er ist, sie nehmen Hölderlin direkt beim Wort. Auch in den beiden Zyklen nach Gedichten von Georg Trakl entfaltet sich eine musikalische Lyrik, die von einer intensiven Lesart des Texts getragen wird. Grundsätzlich suchen die Vertonungen Killmayers, dem Autor angemessen, eine stärkere Psychologisierung innerhalb der vielfältigen Klangbildlichkeit, die Trakls Lyrik mit der von Hölderlin verbindet. Beim letzten umfangreichen Liederzyklus Killmayers nach Gedichten Joseph von Eichendorffs handelt es sich um ein lyrisch-musikalisches Projekt, das auf doppelte Weise aufgeführt werden kann: einerseits als Wechsel zwischen Männerchorliedern a capella und Klavierliedern für Tenor oder eben als reiner Klavierliederzyklus.« (Pressetext Wergo)
