Festive symphony by
Bedřich Smetana(
)
13 editions published between 1987 and 2021 in 3 languages and held by 622 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Bedrich Smetana's 'Festive Symphony' was composed in 1854 when hopes for Emperor Franz Joseph becoming King of Bohemia were high. The splendid sounds of Smetana's only formal symphony pre-echo later masterpieces such as 'Ma Vlast,' but his use of the Austrian Imperial anthem became unacceptable in the subsequent spirit of Czech nationalism, resulting in the work's neglect. With it's sparkling overture and lively rural dances, 'The Bartered Bride' secured Smetana's international reputation and, as the only Czech opera of it's day to enter the standard repertoire, it became a beacon for the nation's 19th century musical renaissance. Conductor Darrell Ang is the artistic director and chief conductor of China's Sichuan Symphony. He regularly conducts orchestras across the world, including the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin

Jon Vickers and Régine Crespin are the brother and sister who fall rapturously in love, only to be torn apart by death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie of the title who is punished by her father (the magnificent Theo Adam as Wotan) for doing what he really wants her to do. Herbert von Karajan conducts his final Met performance

When Wotan (the great Friedrich Schorr) tries to stop him, Siegfried uses his sword to break the god's spear and makes his way to the sleeping Brünnhilde (a radiant Kirsten Flagstad). He awakens her with a kiss--and sets in motion the events that, in the following opera, will bring about the end of the world. Kerstin Thorborg co-stars as Erda and Artur Bodanzky conducts
