"Set in the mid-18th century [Der Rosenkavalier] is a comic intrigue involving the aristocratic Marschallin, her young lover Octavian, her vulgar cousin Baron Ochs and his prospective fiancée Sophie. Parsifal by
Richard Wagner(
)
9 editions published between 1964 and 2006 in German and Undetermined and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero

Tannhäuser by
Richard Wagner(
Recording
)
18 editions published between 1961 and 2014 in German and Undetermined and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Wagner worked on Tannhäuser, his fifth opera, from 1842 to 1845, conducting the first performance on October 19, 1845 at the Dresden Royal Opera. The first two nights were uncertaqin successes, but by the third performance the opera began to have its effect on the audience. Over the next few years it became enormously popular throughout Germany, then moved to other countries. In 1859 it became the first Wagner opera to be performed in America. By 1861 Tannhäuser had been given hundreds of times, when Wagner was called upon to produce a revised version for the Paris Opéra. Despite the composer's efforts to adapt the work for French tastes, anti-Wagner riots broke out and he withdrew the work. It was not seen again in France until 1895. Meanwhile Tannhäuser, in the Dresden version, opened the second season of New York's Metropolitan Opera in November of 1884. Nowadays either the Dresden or Paris version may be given, depending on the director's preference; the current recording is an amalgam of the two. -- Page [1-2] of program notes

Based on real events and playwright Georg Büchner's starkly vehement text, Alban Berg's tragic opera is an epoch-making work, in stark contrast to the previous high romantic ideals of the genre, that led Schoenberg to exclaim 'now that's what I call an opera!'

Under James Levine's thrilling direction the famous Met Orchestra is at its best in this first installment of Wagner's Ring cycle. From the dark, mysterious beginning in the depths of the Rhine River to the blazing end as the gods cross the rainbow bridge into their new home of Valhalla, this is a searing performance. James Morris is the commanding Wotan, the god who thinks he has everything under control, even as he unwittingly sows the seeds of his own destruction
