La fanciulla del West by
Giacomo Puccini(

6 editions published between 1978 and 1984 in Italian and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Presents the action of the opera, based on the play by David Belasco, set at the height of the notorious Californian Gold Rush; this opera represents "a major advance on Puccini's previous work, especially in the careful interweaving of Western elements into an altogether larger canvas than anything he had tackled before."

Benjamin Britten(

)
3 editions published between 1990 and 2005 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Thomas Mann's celebrated tale of unrequited love and death is given a new perspective in Benjamin Britten's final opera, first performed just a year and a half before this Met broadcast. The composer's long-time companion, tenor Peter Pears, reprises his world-premiere portrayal of Gustav von Aschenbach, the elderly and solitary novelist at the center of the story, who tragically falls in love with the beautiful youth Tadzio (played by a dancer). Pears is joined by two other veterans of the opera's world premiere--John Shirley-Quirk, who plays the seven characters that propel Aschenbach to his destiny, and conductor Steuart Bedford

)
6 editions published between 1988 and 2012 in German and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Wagner's powerful and wrenching tale of ill-fated love requires a cast of great singing actors, and that's just what this broadcast provides. Jon Vickers and Régine Crespin are the brother and sister who fall rapturously in love, only to be torn apart by death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie of the title who is punished by her father (the magnificent Theo Adam as Wotan) for doing what he really wants her to do. Herbert von Karajan conducts his final Met performance

The beggar's opera by
Benjamin Britten(
Recording

3 editions published between 1981 and 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
N 1981 Richard Bonynge, together with an illustrious cast of singers (Joan Sutherland, Kiri Te Kanawa, et. al.) and actors (Angela Lansbury, Warren Mitchell, Michael Hordern, et. al.) went into Kingsway Hall for a recording of a new edition (by Richard Bonynge and Douglas Gamley) of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. Written in 1728, it is a ballad opera in three acts (Ballad operas were satiric musical plays that used some of the conventions of opera, but without recitative. The lyrics of the airs in the piece are set to popular broadsheet ballads, opera arias, church hymns and folk tunes of the time.) Running for 62 consecutive performances, the piece notched up a record the longest run in theatre history up to that time. Unlike other existing recordings of The Beggar's Opera, this new performing edition features opera stars alongside great actors as well as a full-size (double woodwind) orchestra. One of the most sought after of Sutherland/Bonynge collaborations, the original CD has long been out of print and here reappears with the original liner notes as well as the full libretto
