Dialogues des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc( )

81 editions published between 1957 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 2,543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The tragic fate of the nuns of the Carmelite convent at Copiègne during the French Revolution inspired one of Francis Poulenc's most personal works, and one of the most profoundly moving operas in the repertoire. At its center is Isabel Leonard as Blanche de la Force, a shy young aristocratic woman who joins the order on the eve of the Revolution, flees when the sisters, forced to leave their convent, take a vow of martyrdom, and is finally reunited with them as they face death by the guillotine. Felicity Palmer is Madame de Croissy, Patricia Racette is Madame Lidoine, and Elizabeth Bishop is Mother Marie. Paul Appleby and David Pittsinger co-star as Blanche's brother and father

Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns( Recording )

42 editions published between 1963 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 694 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The opera is based on the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah found in Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. It is the only opera by Saint-Saëns that is regularly performed. The second act love scene in Delilah's tent is one of the set pieces that define French opera. Two of Delilah's arias are particularly well known: "Printemps qui commence" ("Spring begins") and "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" ("My heart opens itself to your voice", also known as "Softly awakes my heart"), the latter of which is one of the most popular recital pieces in the mezzo-soprano/contralto repertoire

Faust by Charles François Gounod( )

12 editions published between 1959 and 2012 in French and German and held by 562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

René Pape's swaggering Mephistophélès is as seductive as it is demonic in this story of Faust (Roberto Alagna) who sells his soul to the devil to reclaim his youth. Wasting no time, Faust falls in love with Marguerite (Solie Isokoski) but things soon begin to go horribly wrong. Her brother (Dmitri Hvorostovvsky) is murdered, she goes insane, and Faust is dragged to hell. But the music is unforgettable
Die Walküre by Richard Wagner( Recording )

39 editions published between 1962 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 553 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's powerful and wrenching tale of ill-fated love requires a cast of great singing actors, and that's just what this broadcast provides. Jon Vickers and Régine Crespin are the brother and sister who fall rapturously in love, only to be torn apart by death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie of the title who is punished by her father (the magnificent Theo Adam as Wotan) for doing what he really wants her to do. Herbert von Karajan conducts his final Met performance
