Compuesta entre 1857 y 1859, fue estrenada en Múnich el 10 de junio de 1865, bajo la batuta de Hans von Bülow. En España se estrenó el 8 de noviembre de 1899, en el Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona. En la composición de Tristán e Isolda, Wagner se inspiró en su aventura con Mathilde Wesendonck, así como en la filosofía de Arthur Schopenhauer. Reconocida como una de las obras cumbres del repertorio operístico, Tristán destaca por el avanzado uso del cromatismo, la tonalidad y la armonía
