Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by
Richard Wagner(
Visual
)
8 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in German and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Katharina Wagner stages The Mastersingers of Nuremberg in Bayreuth. The young knight Walther von Stolzing (Klaus Florian Vogt) is in love with the young Eva Pogner (Michaela Kaune), who loves him in return, but is promised to the future winner of a singing contest held the next day. Walter tries as quickly as he can to learn the rules of composition, but on the day of the contest he is booed by the jury ... The Mastersingers is an expression of the endless quarrel between the Ancients (Die Meistersinger, who deeply want to keep the present rules of composition) and modern (embodied by the cobbler Hans Sachs and the young Stolzing). The peculiarity of this stage direction is that Katharina Wagner wants to make Sixtus Beckmesser (Michael Volle) friendly, because he is really humiliated through the opera. Unique comic drama ever composed by Wagner, The Mastersingers fits perfectly to the colorful staging imagined by the young Katharina Wagner, great granddaughter of the composer and co-director of the Festival Bayreuth. In 2007, this production opened the 96th edition of the Bayreuth Festival, and was played the following summer of 2008, time of this recording
