Palestrina : [musikalische Legende in drei Akten] by
Hans Pfitzner(
)
22 editions published between 1990 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Parsifal by
Richard Wagner(
)
14 editions published between 1994 and 2001 in 4 languages and held by 464 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The mystical enchantment of Wagner's last opera means it has special place in the hearts of opera lovers. On the surface, it's the story of Parsifal's quest to restore the Holy Grail. But for many listeners it is also a profound inner journey that takes them to a unique place. James Levine's conducting of the work has become legendary, and our all-star cast, with Plácido Domingo in the title role, is on the same exalted plane. Violeta Urmana is the temptress Kundry and Ekkehard Wlaschiha is the evil magician Klingsor

The opera holds a crucial place in history, setting the course of German Romantic opera. Nikolaus Harnoncourt's typically probing approach produced an interpretation that, in the words of the distinguished critic Alan Blyth, 'has the ring of reality about it, uncovering the troubled psyche and element of superstition in this extraordinary piece.'

Under James Levine's thrilling direction the famous Met Orchestra is at its best in this first installment of Wagner's Ring cycle. From the dark, mysterious beginning in the depths of the Rhine River to the blazing end as the gods cross the rainbow bridge into their new home of Valhalla, this is a searing performance. James Morris is the commanding Wotan, the god who thinks he has everything under control, even as he unwittingly sows the seeds of his own destruction

SCHOENBERG : Moses und Aron by
Arnold Schoenberg(
)
4 editions published between 1976 and 1994 in German and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Schoenberg's masterpiece in the twelve-tone system he developed was his unfinished opera, a vastly complex work based on a single tone row that it remained a fragment may be essential to its spiritual message, for while Schoenberg never stated it explicitly, it would seem that he left this most ambitious project of his mature style incomplete on purpose

Wozzeck by
Alban Berg(
)
4 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in German and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The history of Wozzeck began nearly 200 years ago, when Johann Christian Woyzeck, a onetime soldier and jobless wigmaker, killed his sweetheart with a knife in a fit of jealous rage. The tragic incident provided the material for the German playwright Georg Büchner, who interpreted the fate of Woyzeck as a mass phenomenon; in his play, Büchner portrays the convicted murdered as a hopeless, compulsive creature, a mere cog in the wheels of a destructive and repressive system that tramples all human values underfoot. Such is the message communicated in Alban Berg’s setting of the work, which was premiered more than 100 years later in Berlin..."--Presto Classical website

This is one of the legendary performances from the Met's vast archive of historic broadcasts. The incomparable Lauritz Melchior stars in the title role of the young hero who sets out to explore the world--killing the fierce dragon Fafner (Eduard Habich) and the evil dwarf Mime (Karl Laufkötter) along the way. When Wotan (the great Friedrich Schorr) tries to stop him, Siegfried uses his sword to break the god's spear and makes his way to the sleeping Brünnhilde (a radiant Kirsten Flagstad). He awakens her with a kiss--and sets in motion the events that, in the following opera, will bring about the end of the world. Kerstin Thorborg co-stars as Erda and Artur Bodanzky conducts

Fidelio, op. 72 by
Ludwig van Beethoven(
Recording
)
7 editions published in 1990 in 4 languages and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, was based on J.N. Bouilly's Léonore, ou L'amour conjugal, a rescue drama typical of the literature of the French Revolution. The story, possibly derived from a real incident, is a convoluted one, but its celebration of courage and idealism in the face of tyranny greatly appealed to the composer's personal values. The opera took a decade to reach its final form, and even though the work of the librettists in adapting the material left much to be desired -- Joseph Sonnleithner's rather turgid original efforts of 1805-1806 were only partially redeemed by the revisions of Georg Friedrich Treitschke in 1814 -- the end result, thanks to the extraordinary quality of the music, is one of the most powerful and moving operas ever written. - Disc 1 insert p. 3
