"In this complete studio recording of a newly prepared critical edition -- the first on period instruments -- Giovanni Antonini and Cecilia Bartoli reveal Norma's authentic pre-Romantic roots and return to Bellini's original conception. The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today's listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles, while Adalgisa was conceived for a light silvery soprano. With Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo heard here for the first time on record together, this iconic opera has been restored as Bellini originally intended."--Container

In Zurich, a Barber of Seville full of energy and humour with a perfect Rosine Filmed in April 2001 at the Zurich Opera, this Barber of Seville is by the excellent Rossini. Grischa Asagaroff's direction is full of inspiration and humour: the scenery, a huge fan (naturally since we are in Seville) which swivels facilitating the "production" of gags, and the transposition into the 1930s with the appropriate costumes, side-car and scooter is effective. Acclaimed by the audience, the conductor Nello Santi, who is at home at the Zurich Opera (he was the musical director there for ten years, 1958-1968) is a Rossinian conductor of great stature who also plays the piano part. But the real jewel in this film is Rosine played by Vesselina Kasarova who is an authentic mezzo-soprano coloratura. A virtuoso musician and perfect actor, she is charm personified. Around her is an excellent distribution and it is a delight to see Nicolaoi Ghiaurov in the role of Basil which he performs with great experience

Orphée aux enfers by Jacques Offenbach( Visual )

3 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in French and Undetermined and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This finely-focused and witty production of Jacques Offenbach's Orphée aux Enfers with sets, costumes and lighting by the director Herbert Wernicke, is a visual and musical delight. The burlesque - conducted by Patrick Davin - is situated in a famous fin de siècle café and with a stupendous coup de théâtre the ensemble makes its entry into hell in a steam locomotive, which crashes through the ceiling. Elizabeth Vidal and Alexandru Badea in the main roles are supported energetically by the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and Offenbach's famous "can-can" is, as ever, an intoxicating highlight. In Offenbach's light and elegant comedy based on the Greek legend of Orpheus - a veiled satire on Napoleon III's régime - a dissolute bunch of gods, bored with the cushioned confines of Mount Olympus, are in a rebellious mood. They are delighted to go slumming in Hell with the duplicitous Jupiter, who agrees personally to return Eurydice (now Pluto's lover) to her reluctant (and unfaithful) husband, hoping that, in the process, she will succumb to his charms
