"Tristan und Isolde" ist in der "inneren Dimension" schwer zu messen. Kein anderes der Musikdramen Wagners ist so völlig auf ein einziges Thema konzentriert, verzichtet so weitgehend auf theatralische Handlung und ist so ausschließlich auf den Ausdruck tiefster Gefühle angelegt: die Liebe zweier Menschen, die bis in den Tod dauert. Wagner schuf hier neuartige Musik, an deren Beginn ein Akkord ohne tonale Bindung steht, so dass von einem der Anfänge der "Neuen Musik" gesprochen werden kann. Lange Zeit musste der Komponist nach einem Uraufführungstheater für dieses Werk suchen, bis König Ludwig II. von Bayern es 1885 in München unter Hans von Bülow uraufführen ließ. "Tristan und Isole" wurde für alle Zeiten ein Bekenntnis zur ewigen Welt der Gefühle, zum Sieg des Humanismus über den Materialismus
