Tutoring and demonstrating : a handbook by Werner Drexler( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This handbook, primarily for new part-time teaching staff at colleges and universities in the United Kingdom, focuses on tutoring and demonstrating teaching skills. Following an introductory chapter, six additional chapters provide an orientation to tutoring and demonstrating. Chapter 2 presents an overview of the roles and responsibilities of new staff. Chapter 3 outlines preparation for tutorial classes in the arts and social sciences. Chapter 4 focuses on tutoring of problem-solving classes in mathematics and the sciences. Chapter 5 reviews demonstrating practices in science laboratory and field classes. Chapter 6 reviews the tutor's role in relation to coursework essays and grading written work. Chapter 7 examines the tutor's role in guidance and support. Chapter 8 is a bridging chapter, which reviews key research findings on student learning. The next four chapters address ways in which part-time staff can enhance effectiveness. Chapter 9 focuses on the value of working with a mentor and sharing ideas with other tutors and demonstrators. Chapter 10 suggests methods for getting feedback on one's teaching and for analyzing and applying the results. Chapter 11 argues for the adoption of a reflective approach to practice. Chapter 12 is a compendium of sources of information. (Many chapters contain references.) (Db)

Preparation and support for part-time teachers in higher education : case studies of departmental practice by Werner Drexler( Book )

3 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication presents 14 departmental case studies of the preparation and support provided to part-time teachers in Scottish institutions of higher education. The case studies are grouped in four sections according to the category of part-time staff involved: practicing professionals (professional teaching assistants, lawyers, artists, and other practitioners); part-time tutors and teaching assistants; workplace supervisors; and demonstrators. An introduction to each section identifies the principles and commonalities of the support provisions detailed in the case studies from the following Scottish institutions: University of Strathclyde, the Robert Gordon University, University of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret College, and the University of St. Andrews. Case studies are drawn from the following fields: architecture and building science, law, art, mathematics and statistics, artificial intelligence, economics, government (politics), occupational therapy, health and nursing, pharmacy, biological and medical sciences, applied sciences, and geology. An article, "Departmental Preparation and Support for Part-Time Teachers: Principles of Good Practice" (David Nicol and Fred Forster) follows the case studies. Appendices include a summary of elements of good practice from the case studies; guidelines for postgraduate tutors from the University of Strathclyde, and the Code of Practice on Tutoring and Demonstrating from the University of Edinburgh. Classroom by Classroom Analysis of the Impact of a Compensatory Education Program by Werner Drexler( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the CO-Plus project by organizing data to utilize the classroom as the basic unit of analysis. The study employed classroom observations, a variety of questionnaire responses from staff and pupils, achievement test scores, and related data. Questionnaire data were summarized using factor analysis and relationships between observations. Questionnaire responses were identified using multiple regression and canonical correlation. The analysis indicated that significant relationships exist between classroom behavior, staff and pupil attitudes, and achievement test gains and that the utilization of the classroom as the basic unit strengthens the analysis. Using the Rasch Model to Increase the Power of Item Analysis by Werner Drexler( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A method is described which used the Rasch model for combining information across administrations of the same items in different tests to different student populations. The method was used in conjunction with the composite point biserial and mean square fit to provide more valid information about item quality. Over 700 items were administered to groups of students in grades 5 through 9. Each group was comprised of 150 to 250 students, and was located in one of three school districts. Using the level of the achievement group relative to the equal interval Rasch item calibration made it possible to superimpose all the administrations onto a single item characteristic curve (icc). Findings included: (1) neither the point biserial nor the mean square fit was a reliable indicator of item quality, and neither appeared to be a substitute for the icc; (2) the method of combining information across administrations significantly increased the amount and utility of information available about the actual performance of an item. Research on the Rasch Measurement Model by Werner Drexler( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research on the Rasch model of test and item analysis was applied to tests constructed from item banks for reading and mathematics with respect to five practical problems for scaling items and equating test forms. The questions were: (1) Does the Rasch model yield the same scale value regardless of the student sample? (2) How many students are needed to accurately scale a test: (3) Are the scale values for items equal interval? (4) Does the Rasch produce equal achievement levels for the same students on different tests? (5) Does an item receive the same scaling regardless of the other items on the test? All of the research, including replications of three of the studies, supported the usefulness and accuracy of the Rasch model. It was judged that 200 students were sufficient to produce reliable item scaling. (Ctm)

The Rasch Item Characteristic Curve and Actual Item Performance by Werner Drexler( Book )

1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Various factors which influence the relationship between the Rasch item characteristic curve and the actual performance of an item are identified. The Rasch item characteristic curve is a new concept in test design and analysis. The Rasch test model provides information concerning the percent of students with a specified achievement level who would be expected to correctly answer a question with a specified difficulty. Using this information, it is possible to make a continuous plot of the expected percent correct across the full range of achievement. This plot constitutes the Rasch item characteristic curve. From the data gathered in this study it appears that using a minimum score group size of three to five students, a refined fit cutoff of .05 to .10 are optimum. Future research will be directed toward cross validating these findings. (Author/RC)
