In the courtyard of the palace of Agamemnon, murdered king of Mycenae, Elektra bemoans her father's murder at the hands of her mother, Klytämnestra, and her mother's lover, Aegisth. She vows vengeance. She is interrupted by her younger sister, Chrysothemis, who urges Elektra to give up her obsession with revenge so they both can lead normal lives. Chrysothemis reappears with news that Orest is dead. Stunned, Elektra tells her sister she must now help kill Klytämnestra and Aegisth. When the girl pulls away in terror and runs off, Elektra starts to dig for the buried ax that killed Agamemnon. She is interrupted by a stranger who says he has come to inform Klytämnestra of Orest's death. When Elektra reveals her name, he tells her Orest lives. Servants come and kiss his hand. The dogs of the house know me, he says, but not my own sister. Crying his name, Elektra falls into Orest's arms and tells him she has lived only for his return. Their reunion is cut short when Orest is summoned before Klytämnestra. He kills both the queen and her lover. Elektra begins an ecstatic dance and when Chryothemis returns, Elektra falls dead

In his new production of Korngold's Das Wunder der Heliane (The Miracle of Heliane)--voted Revival of the Year in Opernwelt--director Christof Loy sets the action in a strikingly lit wood-panelled hall early in the twentieth century. In period costumes, the stars evoke the dreamlike quality of Korngold's music and Hans Müller-Einigen's libretto, a delicate balance between religious and erotic undertones. With the world-class Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dutch conductor Mark Albrecht's impressive interpretation of Korngold's score brings out its Mahlerian influences--notably at the end of Act I, inspired by Des Knaben Wunderhorn. This triumphant production (the first audiovisual recording of the opera!) should reinvigorate interest in this undersung work that Korngold considered his finest, one of the final masterpieces of Viennese Romanticism
