Die Entstehungsgeschichte des Musikalischen Opfers BWV 1079 ist bekannt: Bei einem Besuch am preußischen Hof in Potsdam bei Friedrich II. wurde Bach gebeten, über ein vom König vorgegebenes Thema zu variieren und zu fugieren. Inspiriert von diesem Thema arbeitete er es nach der Heimkehr nach Leipzig weiter aus, ergänzte das Werk durch eine Triosonate für Flöte, Violine und Basso continuo und widmete es als "musikalisches Opfer" dem Flöte spielenden preußischen König. Die Besetzung und die Reihenfolge der 10 Kanons und der beiden Ricercare, die alle das königliche Thema als Grundlage haben, sind nicht festgelegt. - Das Ensemble Concerto Melante, bestehend aus Mitgliedern der Berliner Philharmoniker (2 Violinen, Gambe, Flöte und Cembalo) orientiert sich in seiner Aufnahme am Faksimile der einzig erhaltenen Quelle, dem Erstdruck von 1747 (Bachs autographe Druckvorlage ist verschollen) und lässt das Musikalische Opfer in der Reihenfolge des Erstdrucks erklingen
