Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi( )

20 editions published between 1990 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The role of Simon Boccanegra is one of the capstones of Verdi's baritone repertoire. Sherrill Milnes gives a stunning portrayal of the 14th century Genoa doge, singing with both power and poetry, and reminding everyone why audiences acclaimed him the great American Verdi baritone of the day. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is Amelia, his long-lost daughter, in love with one of Boccanegra's most bitter political enemies. James Levine reveals his passion for Verdi's score, bringing out all the drama while reveling in its aching lyricism

The vocalists for this touching work are Rosa Feola, Gerhild Romberger, Dmitry Korchak and Mika Kares. La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli( )

15 editions published between 2003 and 2013 in Italian and German and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With Renata Tebaldi wringing every bit of drama out of the title role, there are plenty of opportunities for goose bumps here. Add to that Carlo Bergonzi's glowing portrayal of the Enzo, the man she loves and the impassioned Fiorenza Cossotto as the woman he loves, plus one jealous husband (Bonaldo Giaiotti), and an Inquisition spy (Cornell MacNeil) bent on revenge, and you have operatic extravagance at its wonderful best, all set in romantic, mysterious 17th century Venice

The young Leonie Rysanek triumphs in her second Met broadcast of the almost four dozen she would do during her astonishing career. Here she is Elizabeth of Valois, married to King Philip II of Spain (Jerome Hines), even though she loves his son, Don Carlo (Giulio Gari). Rysanek's heartbreaking performance fully connects with Elizabeth's passion and despair. Beloved baritone Robert Merrill is Don Carlo's friend, Roderigo, killed by the Inquisition. Blanche Thebom is Princess Eboli and future superstar Martina Arroyo is heard in her Met debut role as the Celestial Voice

7 editions published between 1986 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When this production opened, it had been more than half a century since Met audiences had last heard Bellini's gem of an opera. It was well worth the wait. "The best cast in the world," was how one critic described the legendary performers the Met brought together. The pair sent audiences into a frenzy with their sumptuous, dazzling singing. Joan Sutherland, dubbed "La Stupenda" by her fans and the press, is the hapless heroine Elvira who loses her heart--and her sanity--over Luciano Pavarotti, the Cavalier hero torn between love and duty

La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi( )

3 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in Italian and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Verdi painted an immense canvas with this dark but tuneful opera. The legendary Leontyne Price is seen in one of her greatest roles, Leonora. Price's soaring voice encompasses every nuance of Leonora's emotion as she moves from joy through resignation to ultimate heartbreak. James Levine's brilliant leading of the Met orchestra and chorus is a lesson in Verdi style. Giuseppe Giacomini is Alvaro, the man Leonora loves, and Leo Nucci is Don Carlo, the dark instrument of their Fate
Ernani by Giuseppe Verdi( )

2 editions published in 2013 in Italian and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cristoforo Colombo by Alberto Franchetti( Recording )

13 editions published in 1992 in 4 languages and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alberto Franchetti's festival opera, Cristoforo Colombo, was written for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. It's a powerful work, with echoes of late Verdi, much Ponchielli, and even Wagner. Not exactly verismo, but those who enjoy Leoncavallo and Giordano, will find much to please. Renato Bruson, the "Cristoforo Colombo" lead, carries the work, and his almost thirty minute monologue in the memorable Epilogue of the work is quite impressive. In short, a rarity that should be better known and enjoyed by opera lovers. Franchetti's operas Figlia di Iorio and Germania were made notable by Enrico Caruso during the first decade of the twentieth century; they should be revived, also. In the meantime, this recording is a very good introduction to much neglected composer and his oeuvre"
