Thaïs by
Jules Massenet(
)
12 editions published between 2003 and 2012 in French and Undetermined and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Take one ascetic monk named Athanaël and one ravishingly beautiful courtesan named Thaïs, add Massenet's sensual, melodious music, with equal dashes of eroticism and religious fervor--and you have a powerful opera that is at once a celebration of the sacred and the profane, of flesh and soul. This rarity had not been heard at the Met for almost 40 years when it was brought back as a vehicle for the great soprano Beverly Sills and the magnetic singing actor Sherrill Milnes. Together, they masterfully bring to life the searing conflict at the heart of the drama

Alfonso und Estrella by
Franz Schubert(
)
5 editions published in 2004 in German and held by 291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Franz Schubert was a prolific composer, perhaps best known for his symphonies and chamber music, but he also turned his hand to Romantic opera. Despite having no experience of seeing his theatrical works performed on stage, Schubert’s enthusiasm for the genre was not dampened. In 1821, in close collaboration with librettist Franz von Schober, the composer began work on Alfonso und Estrella. He would never see the opera performed during his lifetime, and although it was premiered by Franz Lizst in Weimar in 1854, the work – criticised for its lack of dramatic action – would never make it into the core repertoire. While the opera would not necessarily triumph onstage from a dramatic point of view, a recording is the perfect medium in which to revel in the charming lyricism of the work. This special recording from 1978 brought the opera out of neglect, boasting an impressive list of singers. Schreier is praised for his ‘elegant tones and graceful phrasing’ (Gramophone) in the role of Alfonso, and Mathis brings warmth and sensitivity to the role of Estrella. The cast list also boasts internationally acclaimed baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whose duet with Herman Prey – in which their voices unite ‘in consummate artistry’ (Gramophone)– is undoubtedly a highlight of the recording."--Publisher's description

Perhaps the world's best tenor, Andrea Bocelli brings a touch of sincerity and an arresting sound to Georges Bizet's most popular and stylistically revolutionary opera. After its initial performance run in Paris in 1875, Carmen launched a global shift towards realism, later referred to worldwide as verismo. It is also the fourth most performed opera in North America according to Opera America. Carmen plus Bocelli can only equal greatness
