In the war of liberation against Ireland, Tristan has killed Isolde's betrothed, Morolde, and sent her his severed head as a gesture of defiance. However, Tristan has suffered a bad injury and reluctantly goes to Isolde under a false name to benefit from her healing powers. While there, they fall in love with one another, despite Isolde's discovery of Tristan's true identity. When back in Cornwall under the leadership of his Uncle, King Marke, Tristan feels guilty over the death of Morolde. Because he believes this will stand between himself and Isolde, Tristan offers to win the hand of Isolde for his Uncle
