[Orchestral suite no. 2] by
Johann Sebastian Bach(
)
15 editions published between 1962 and 2000 in 3 languages and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
J.S. Bach's Suite in B Minor is the second in a series of four orchestral suites (BWV 1066-69) which the composer originally titled "Ouvertures", no doubt due to their French derivation. Each features a different instrumentation. The B Minor Suite is scored for transverse flute, strings and continuo and includes a French overture and six dance movements. Scholars speculate that Bach composed this work with the great French flutist Buffardin in mind, but there is no solid evidence to substantiate this fact, nor to even establish what year the Suite was written. This woodwind quintet arrangement by Dr. Waln consists of the final two movements. The Minuet is arranged in a traditional ensemble style with equal importance placed upon each of the five parts while the Badinerie is characterized by the sprightly flute solo accompanied by the other four winds. - Performance notes
