Jean Racine's Cantiques spirituels : musical settings(
)
2 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In 1694 Jean Racine, one of the great writers of classical French tragedy, wrote four poems titled Cantiques spirituels. These poems were set to music by several composers, some with close ties to the court of Louis XIV: Jean-Baptiste Moreau, Michel-Richard de Lalande, Pascal Collasse, Jean-Baptiste de Bousset, Jean-Nol︠ Marchand, and Duhalle. Both the poetry and the music of these works are significant examples of the cantique spirituel, a genre that held an important place in Catholic religious culture during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The works in this edition reflect the influence of Bénigne de Bacilly, who helped change the cantique from a simple strophic song to a learned, ornate composition of high artistic quality. The cantique settings presented here range in scope from settings for solo voice and basse continue to grand pieces for voices and symphonies, and together they testify to a rich tradition of composition within an important musical tradition." --
