"Claudio Abbado conducts the chorus and orchestra of the Vienna State Opera in a powerful recording of the first of Alban Berg's two influential operas, Wozzeck. Berg was initially attracted to Georg Büchner's dramatic play of the same title in 1914, but did not complete his opera until after the first world war when it premiered amid some controversy in Berlin in 1925. As one of the few stage works of the Expressionist period, it offers a fascinating illustration of the stylistic tendencies of the time - gruesome detail, horror, passion and torment. Franz Grundheber plays the soldier Wozzeck who, driven mad with jealousy, stabs his mistress Marie (sung by Hildegard Behrens) to death before drowning himself. Philip Langridge stars as Andres in this moving performance of one of the great classics of modern music. Peter Mussbach's highly stylized production heightens the emotional intensity of this searing work and becomes an agonizing lament over lost innocence."--Container
