Vita del gloriosissimo Papa Pio V by
Girolamo Catena(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1587 in Italian and Latin and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
First edition of the life and reign of Pius V, the quintessential counter-reformation pope. Although Pius, member of the Dominican order, was personally ascetic and unworldly, his pontificate was marked by statecraft of the most energetic kind. His political activities were controlled by one principle, the extirpation of the heretic , and war upon infidels. His vision and diplomacy secured an alliance with Spain and Venice against the Turks, and contributed greatly to the victory at Lepanto in 1571, which saved southern Europe from Ottoman invasion. Much of the present work is devoted to Pius's attempts at resolution of the Turkish problem, and the last ten pages list the ships and commanders, on both sides, who fought at Lepanto. Catena was secretary to Cardinal Riario, Patriarch of Alexandria, and enjoyed access to Pius's archives including his correspondence
